Bruce Brewski's Cold Hard Facts:Training Camp Aug. 20

Me and a few of my buddies, went down to training camp last night and it was an absolute delight. The weather was phenomenal, overcast and cool. I usually not big on getting autographs, but I got a picture shaking john foxes hand. Also, pics with Jeff Davidson, Ron Meeks, Matt Moore, DeAngelo Williams, and Steve Smith. As well as, their autographs, and I got my authentic Steve Smith Jersey signed, so that was pretty amazing. I will have pics up later.

Well here are my Cold Hard Six Facts about last night.

1. I have always supported Jake, and I still do. But last nights practice he was nothing short of awful. In live scrimmage, he completed probably 2-10 and both of them were check downs to D-will. He completely overthrew most of the receivers, and it was not even close. I don't remember a camp or a extended time period where he looked so uncomfortable on the field. He needs to find his mojo.

2. Everett Brown puts more effort on every play than any other defensive lineman, and I watched most of then individually for a few plays and in drills. He is going to be successful, because he is going to be called one of the "motor" guys, but most of those dont have his athleticism. I love the way he gets after "it".

3. I cannot believe that Nick Hayden blows as much as he does. He is one of the bigger players, His arms are absolutely huge. If going by appearance he looks like a pro-bowler. He was no longer working with the first team.

4. Steve Smith may be 30, but he still has quickness that stands out on and NFL field. He made a few nice receptions. He also got open on a deep pass, but the ball was badly underthrown by Josh McCown. The corner I believe it was Captain Munnerlyn made a good play on it. But from the looks of things Smitty has atleast 3 solid years left.

5. If you go to camp, during the boring stretching and stuff. Watch Jordan Gross. He loves to pick on Ryan Kalil and it is hilarious. When the horn sounded to go to position drills. Jordan kicked Kalil's helmet halfway down the field laughing like hell with Kalil chasing him. It was one of the funnier things I have witnessed.

6. John Fox and Jeff Davidson have not only lost A LOT of weight, but they are hardly recognizable in person. I was chatting with Jeff Davidson, I was telling him he still looks like he could play. And, I wasnt joking. I also, chatted with Ron Meeks, and he didnt seem to thrilled about practice, and seemed borderline irritated. But all of the coachs were super friendly. DeAngelo Williams was very nice and signed autographs for a while, also his neck muscles are huge. Smitty wasn't as outgoing, but i wouldn't expect him to be. But he stayed and autographed my jersey, and personalized it (YAY). I know he personalized it so i couldn't sell it. But it was still cool. we had a fist pound during the picture it was also pretty cool.

Stay tuned for pictures.

Sounds like a great time. Gross kicking the helmet is funny as hell. Stewart was the joker in the AM... I agree, Jake was just about that same way earlier for that morning's practice, though he did complete a few more passes than that and really only worked with the rookies.

I was fortunate to have Smith sign my jersey as well. It's a good feeling and I couldn't agree more about his potential to last more years... he was always staying late after practice as well working on catching/routes/etc...

Looking forward to the pics.

Great write up, and look forward to the pics. :cheers2:

Jake hasn't looked good since the very start of TC IMHO.

Speaking of auto's, you guys remember our Super Bowl year, when Steve slide down the goal post while we were playing Chicago????

Finally, Finally this year at TC I got him to sign it. I was so stoked. He usually(most all the time) will only sign a jersey, or pic if he puts a name on it, and he is smart for doing it.

Why should he sign those things for free for people to put on Ebay and take money out of his pocket, when he can charge at a show a certain price for each item signed?

I might be reading too much into this and I know it's super early but from I what was said about Jake I wonder if that Cardinals game shattered Jake's confidence. What he saw at camp the other night was pretty accurate to what we saw against the Giants. Overthrows (like the one on the first drive to Kenny Moore) and checkdowns like the one to Hoover and Jarrett that were short of the first down. I'll be the first to admit that I love Jake, my son has a Delhomme Jersey thats about 2 years old and falling apart and I still make him wear it on gameday. But I wonder if what happened in that playoff game and the public backlash has damaged his confidence. Jake is a rythm guy and maybe he is just out of it.

I hope not.

I'm pretty sure that was 05, not our SB year. He also did it in the first game of the 05 season vs the Saints, but the score got called back on a penalty of some sort.

As far as Jake goes, I have seen fans from all the other NFCS teams say about how that game will be unrecoverable for Jake, and they may be right. Confidence is such a finicky thing, it's just not that easy to forget something. I think the contract extension, other than the cap reasons, was trying to give him his confidence back if anything else. He has to do it himself and it may take a couple games, but he has to be on a short leash. Maybe watch a few series or games from the sideline if he struggles.

Yeah...not sure what I was thinking. Think my fingers were moving faster than my brain. :D

    • Maybe a bit of a homer take but I can't give us a grade lower than A.   Freeling was arguably the best LT prospect in the draft.  His athletic ability is off the chart and at 6'7" that can move.  It was a no brainer pick.   Hunter's key word is Violence. Putting him next to Brown should scare an offensive coordinator. These two give Scourton and Phillips plenty of chances to get one on one opportunities. Brazzell, another tall receiver with sprinter speed.  Our WR room is filled with tall talented WR.  Brazzell is going to give us a WR that can take to roof off the defense.  Basically Jimmy Horn with size. W. Lee III has a nickname of the Blanket. (heard this on the Beleav podcast with J. Stewart)  What a great name.  A great value in the 5th round. Hecht A strong, fast and extremely smart center. Many had him listed as the best center in the draft.  He's most likely a starter sooner than later. Wheatley A good safety in round 5.  Someone who could see playing time.   Kuwatch  I love this pick.  At minimum he will be a key piece on special teams and with some good coaching he'll see some packages where he'll play.  His down piece is he doesn't stay up in the running game.  Good coaching will fix this.  He reminds me a bit of A.J. Klein.   All these picks were great value.  I believe everyone of them were graded higher than the pick we took them.   Dan Morgan is IMO doing a great job turning this team into a good team with great depth.
    • Moton is a class act.
    • Sure, that is possible. That’s what, an extra 55 yards a game on average and 7 more TDs? What if he’s just 15th?  I imagine they would extend him in that situation due to the belief that he’ll keep trending up. maybe a 3 year contract to prove he can be top 10? Sounds like a Tepper plan.
