If the Panthers lose should Ron Rivera return?

I do not really know.  I would lean towards yes because I do not think he is the coach to lead us to the promise land.  That being said, I am not sure he deserves to be.  We did lose a lot of pieces from last season and did not have the means to replace them thanks to the mess Hurney left.  These younger players are really playing well of late so some of that could be attributed to Rivera and his staff so I see the argument in favor of keeping him.

For me it would be one of those situations where if a clear cut better option is available then go for it.  If that person is not out there however I do not want to fire him just to fire him and then bring in a new person that is not a clear upgrade.  I want Shula gone though.

All that being said, I do not see any chance of him not being retained.

A year like this, with six straight losses and many of them blowouts, is unforgivable after a 12-4 season.  You then factor in his overall lack of success and were I Gettleman, Sunday is a must-win and so is the playoff game.  Lose either and you're out.

Of course, even with a playoff win, Shula's gone as OC--far too conservative and unimaginative.  I can understand wanting to run the ball to protect Cam, but Shula tends to run the ball in stupid ways, albeit not as stupidly as Dud.  Hand the keys to Ramsdall and let's move forward, unless you can find a better OC somewhere.

No he shouldn't, but he will.

I think you may be the only person with this combination of opinions.  Almost every Panther fan has come to expect the organization to be far too patient with coaches, so much so that we seem doomed to accept mediocrity.  I'm pretty sure everyone else thinks either that he SHOULD be let go but he won't, or that he SHOULDN'T and he won't.

OC and ST coaches MUST go regardless of the outcome of this game. If we lose, I'm mixed: I wanted RR gone regardless of the win/loss a few weeks ago. But putting together a 3 (possibly 4)-game winning streak at the end of a horrid season says A LOT about his ability to hold the team together; I mean, look what's happening to Chicago right now. Head coaches in today's NFL really have that upper level management responsibility. If RR and Getts can get the right coaches in the right places, I think RR will work. But as a genius head coach that can eek out a win that should be a loss based on sheer football knowledge, he's def not that. Jury is still out for me. I guess he needs to win two more games for him to be safe in my book.

Yeah, realistically he should be fired either way. If we make the playoffs though, as the old saying goes, winning cures a lot of ails... If we win and get into the playoffs, we as fans will forget about all the crap that preceded it and I'm sure most won't care going into next season.

If we lose, there is no doubt he should be fired.

Some of it may be on Gettleman, but a lot of it is on Rivera as far as why we had to dig ourselves out of this whole to begin with due to not putting g the best guy on the field come gameday and then of course making some really stupid decisions - playing conservative in cincy and the ATL game.

I dont think RR should go, even if we lose.

Forget all the stuff about injuries, Hardy, cap situation, key player retirements and cuts last season, Cams surgery/injuries....etc. I know many want to see him go regardless, but i find if ironic that we give a pass to a player to "grow" into a position, but the same isnt given to a coach.

Throwing a new coach into the system just changes everything with the chemistry the team is finally beginning to build. Given to that, we have quite a few very key players on the roster that may decide that its better to just end their career with the end of a coaching regime rather than go through the whole transition years ago (Kalil and TD come to mind)

Some people around here were creaming themselves with wanting to hire Lovie. Look how that has turned out for TB..lol. RR may not be a great coach, and he may never be...but considering where we were at when he was hired, and the momentum the team has gained since then...I dont see a reason to get rid of him just yet. Sure we may not be skyrocketing, but we have been steadily improving in terms of management, players and coaches...and setting ourselves up for serious contention. Every year we have steadily improved our record. This year is obviously different, but that is somewhat offset that we are in contention for a division title and playoffs despite the record.

I like RR. I'd hate to see him go before a good maturation period of his style and management of the players has taken root.

He and his staff were hired to help rebuild the team and take rookies and young players and turn them into a competitive team.  He has done that pretty well.  Look at how much better off we are right now than compared to the first game of the year.  This despite a number of injuries and bad situations like with Hardy. The staff has done a great job shuffling in offensive linemen despite the injuries until we have developed a group that is decent. A secondary of rookies and young guys who have played at a high level is a direct result of the coaching they are receiving.

Ron is the kind of coach we have needed for this rebuild especially if Gettleman is going to keep bringing in projects, rookies and UDFAs while letting our proven talent continue to go elsewhere. Let me see a different approach to retaining players before I would consider changing coaches.  Rivera is a players coach who has done a great job teaching and getting the young guys ready to play.  Something Fox never wanted to do. And one of the big reasons that Richardson and Fox soured on each other.

He went with vets until the season was seemingly lost.
