Disappointed the OP left out Mark Fields, he was Thomas Davis before we had thomas davis.

this was hard, because emotions get in the way.

For Sam Mills I'm upset with myself. That i have him listed so low, but that's because of his impact as a leader and coach before God took him from us.

1. Kuechly

2. Davis

3. Beason

4. Greene

5. Mills

EDIT:    Mills was good,  but his impact came from the person he was.. he doesn't have a statue at BoA because of how he played for us.

Some of you are rating our classics too high for the sake of older school is better.      I would take Kuechly,  how he is right now,  over any of our other LBers,  both in the 3-4 and 4-3,  in their prime (well,  their peak when they was with us).  I believe most of you would as well.

To those of you inexplicably saying Sam Mills wasn't that good of a player as a Panther...what are you smoking? Are you old enough to remember him playing for us or are you just assuming he couldn't have actually been that good because of his age? The zone blitz 3-4 scheme that Capers and Fangio came up with played to his strengths perfectly. Did he miss a tackle ever? Was there ever a linebacker here with better hands? He was the best player on the best defense we'e ever had: '96 Panthers defense.

I wish there was some kind of Netflix-like NFL service where you could rewatch full-length NFL games from the past so you guys could see these old Panthers teams if you aren't familiar with them.

Kuechly isn't really better than Davis the last 2 seasons.....and his rookie year doesn't really jump him either.

Luke is likely a little overrated.

Luke hasn't reached his ceiling either....so I definately wouldn't say there is a large gap.

Ranked on their performance while they were here. Injuries excluded. Or else Morgan, Davis and Beason would be bottom three.

Luke Kuechly

- Really nothing much to say here. NFL DPOTY...

Thomas Davis

- Fierce and fast. Incredible cover linebacker, and nasty instincts. Took a bit to develop, but when he did...BOOM.

Dan Morgan

- Until Thomas Davis emerged as a stud and Kuechly gained DPOTY, Morgan was easily the best Mike backer in team history. When healthy (ya ya) he was the best linebacker on the field. Great in coverage and stout against the run. C'mon, SB 38...

Kevin Greene

- One of the all-time great pass rushers, but only here for a flash.

Sam Mills

- Meant more in the locker room, but he was a pivotal part of the team without a doubt. He basically had a hand....so to speak in our first win.

Jon Beason

- Had the makings to be the best Panthers linebacker, but his size really hurt him. Still an excellent linebacker, just not elite like we had all hoped.

Lamar Lathon

- Good player, benefited from having Kevin Greene and Sam Mills around him.

This is pretty much how I see it.

Greene and Lathom played 3-4 as well.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
