Some FA targets

Just curious about a few guys who could potentially be on the roster next year. The articles I read seem to be pretty vague on the value of some of these guys and leave out details of how well the person has played. Derrick Newton from Houston is a name I keep seeing that I know nothing about, and obviously anyone is an upgrade from what we had in 2014. I know there are threads about this already but I want to know what financially feasible options are out there that will fill our needs. Please be in depth explaining their strengths and weaknesses, how they fit our scheme, character concerns, and any other reason you see fit. This is just so I, and others that are curious, will have names to keep an eye on. There does seem to be value in FA's at some of our needs, especially at WR and the defensive backfield, the tackle position seems to be lacking though.

Ignoring the high priced guys who we are very unlikely to acquire due to cost - wide receivers like Thomas, Bryant or Wallace, there are other guys who didn't have a big year or were on IR and might be bargains. Guys like Jeremy Maclin, Cecil Short, Jermaine Kearse, or even the often mentioned Hakeem Nicks. My favorite if he is available is Dwayne Harris who would fill the slot role but more importantly be our punt returner. But then again as an ECU fan you can understand the attraction. This assumes that the big names test free agency so these guys don't climb up in cost and are no longer bargains which is what Gettleman seems to go for. We need 1 or 2 wide receivers to replace Avant and compete with Bersin which shouldn't be too hard. Then pick up someone in the draft who could be a slot guy and our returner. Unless folks want to see Ginn back if he is released.

We need an upgrade at strong safety with cover skills.Maybe guys like Searcy, Rahim Moore, Rolle, or Merriweather. Truth is that compared to other positions safety is a smaller lost and there may be a scramble at safety and corner as there are a bunch of teams even some in our division with suspect secondaries.

I'm gonna have to stop you right there.  No way Maclin doesn't command a top dollar contract.

Kearse probably looking at LaFell money at the very least (3 mil a year) Someone will likely pay that.  While his stats aren't the best playing in Seatle's ground and pound offense with few throws and a QB who does a good job spreading the ball limit his statistical impact.

if he has a big superbowl then watch out.  Some team will think hes the next Golden Tate and throw a bigger contract at him (I'm looking at you Oakland)

Nicks would be decent if Value were there.

Ginn would be welcomed back with open arms.  Ughhh a returner who can actually return.

Harris and Torrey Smith are dream duo.

A lot of this assumes that big names push down the price of guys like Macklin because their could be a glut of receivers in free agency. If that doesn't happen and a lot of these guys get resigned, then it will be the same thing as last year where a bunch of guys were overpriced. We won't even know who is available until we see who is going to be resigned and who will be available.

Keep in mind that other WR's will be cut before free agency starts. Guys like Mike Wallace and Ted Ginn might be options for us.

I know that your sentiment is not about Mike Wallace per se, but after the stunt that he pulled in Miami, I just don't see us signing him.  Let him go to Oakland.

At a discount price, I'm willing to take a flyer on him. Instant deep threat that would compliment Benji on the outside.

I's want him

    • I would write “give remmers tight end help” on a yellow sticky note and stuck it in shulas playbook the night before superbowl 50.
    • And don’t worry about Bryce he will be great… Peyton Manning had a horrible rookie year too 😂
    • Nothing wrong with it at all until you start telling others they are bad fans or not fans. But you are the good fan because you never say negative stuff about the team.    I did many years of that type of uninformed fanning because there really was no info and coverage like there is with the internet.    I mean, I used to go to the store and get Street and Smith’s annual football issue. That was about the extent of what you could get if you didn’t live in a big city with sportswriters covering and reporting.  There was no video to look at or replay the games and if you didn’t live in the market you could only rarely see your football team play.    TI have fanned since being a kid in the early 1960s, and as late as 1995 - ‘97 I lived in Atlanta and good luck getting more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV. No radio either. No print coverage outside of an AP recap and box unless they played Atlanta.  People today that have always had the network connection don’t know.    I wasn’t very educated about the Panthers until I finally got internet.
