Stupidest play call in the history of the NFL

Kevin Greene

Here on the Huddle we're taught in every post-game conference and gameday thread by some folks that it's not about the play call, it's about the players executing. Shula is just peaches and cream as an OC but Cam is the problem because he doesn't execute the plays.

It's interesting to see how just about 0 people have blamed Wilson for a poor decision or terrible throw.

Coaches are supposed to put their players in a position to succeed.

Not so much on the INT.

Hearing Carroll on NFLN, I'm more and more convinced that is was the worst call ever, but it was an even worse placed ball. Once you saw the recievers get jammed up at the line, you either have to take off and hope someone gets open or throw it out of bounds... But again, that's why they play call was so bad... You dont have much room to get outside, so do you take a sack or throw it?

Carroll even just said the other rationale behind it was that if they ran and were stopped, they would have to use the timeout. So, of they pass it, they at least "stop the clock." That is awfully naive of him...

Might have also helped if they hadn't blown a time out for a stupid reason (not watching the play clock) just prior to that.

I think they'll just wait and let it blow over... From listening to Carroll, Bevell, and Wilson, there seems to be a question as to who actually called it.

I think what put Bevell in danger more than the actual call is the stuff he said about Lockette afterwards.

Unbelievable. Probably was trying to give Wilson the glory instead of focusing on feeding the beast.

And yeah, worst call in SB history.

That's exactly what crossed my mind when it happened.  "Carroll's trying to get Wilson the MVP award and it backfired."  That's what happens when the game is on the line and you put the ball in Wilson's hands instead of Beastmode.

Hurry up Fraiser comes on in 10 minutes, you can still catch the reruns.

So Lynch...they believe in you enough to offer HUGE contract extension...but not enough to gain 1 FUGGN yard to win the Superbowl.......Go Figure

That's what I mean.

if it were just the call, you can get past that (though a lot of fans won't).

Blaming your player, though?

    • I thought so at the time as well. Of course if the rookies/Legette keep developing than maybe not. At least they got a fourth and fifth round draft pick out of it and the saved 7 million as the Vikings picked up his contract.
    • That’s what firing Frank was. That’s what the last two years have been. That whole process of him ending up here was a bad decision compounded by another.  In a vacuum trading those assets is defendable. But not that year. It was born of impatience.  But we have taken it this far, may as well see if he can reverse his trajectory the remaining games. Like in the Dumb and Dumber movie, there is a chance.
    • It’s when people say he can’t make “NFL throws” of 20 yards or more. So it’s saying he can’t throw it over 20 yards in the NFL. He did several times last week (he also did the 2nd half of the season) so it shifted to the guys have to be wide open. His arm isn’t the problem. It’s his fundamentals.
