Marques Colston, Jake Long, General Free Agency Questions

C olston can't offer what we need.. Speed, Speed ,

SPeed.. He doesn't play special teams so he has no value to this team.. It's a waste of money when you can get younger players in FA for the same price and you can draft from another good WR class..

Why waste money we have little of in a WR who is the same as KB.. And offers us nothing on special teams or in the stretching the field category. .

To be honest right now your looking at the Name not realizing the player isn't what he was anymore. .

fair enough. i do agree that im probably doing that. i had thought that Colston was in the "stretch-the-field" category. thats why i mentioned him in the OP. and i also agree that its better to go young, but with only 8 draft picks and other (bigger) needs to fill than just WR/PR/KR, we cant use more than two picks on that. and most of the young names i hear in free agency also seem to all be projected to resign with their teams. do you know of an exception?

1) i hear the Saints might cut Marques Colston as a cap casualty. what would he be worth and would it be too much for Carolina? He has always burned the Panthers, might be nice to have him burn someone else FOR the Panthers for a change.

2) i also hear that Jake Long might be cut. is he out of Carolina's reach? is he worth pursuing if not?

3) last point, does anyone know where i can get offensive line statistics, particularly for individual o-linemen (sacks, qb hits/hurries, etc)? i dont really have the money to pay PFF for their premium stats, so i thought i might ask the Huddle for help. haha.

I say yes to both if they come cheaply.

Signing a guy like Colston might seem redundant because of KB but I wouldn't be opposed to it as long as signing a speed WR remains the first priority.  I like the idea of having him because it would give us a ridiculous amount of redzone options, added run blocking at the position, and it hurts the Saints.

Jake Long has some talent or he wouldn't have been drafted so high.  If he signs a 1 or 2 year "earn it" deal then what could it hurt?

Never sign FA WR's from either the Saints nor Patriots.

They are a product of the system and the QB.

im just curious because i dont keep up with those teams well enough to know, but what generally happens when receivers leave the Saints and Pats? i was under the impression that they normally leave in the twilight of their careers, and thus arent hot commodities anyway (not totally worthless, just not studs)

Robert Meachem was Saints best deep threat in 2011. Chargers sign him to 4 year $26 million to help replace Vincent Jackson. Sucked big time and was cut the next year, with 1 writer describing him as the Chargers worst free agent signing not named David Boston. Went back to Saints on 1 year deal.

Meachem is a prime example from the Saints.

I'd take a flyer on long in a heartbeat at a decent price.

Low risk, High reward.

THIS... plus a lot of us are wanting Doug Free, some team will sign him to a big contract out of our range...

Bryan Bugula he will be re-signed, or franchise tagged by Green-Bay. The other big name floating on here is King

Dunlap. As of the end of December last year, he is ex-steamily considering retirement... he had one major

concussion last year and two more good size ones...imo he needs to retire while he's ahead! (no pun intended)

Jake Long may be best left, and I believe we can get him at a descent cap friendly amount.

for these reasons I'm all for pursuing Jake Long...

Jake long may look good on paper but will he even be healthy enough to help us? I would rather spend money on healthy player. Unless he wants to sign for a vet min deal I see no reason to waste the money on him.

I wouldn't be against signing Colston for the right price. He would be a solid #2 WR.

Also Meachem never worked out for San Diego because he is nothing more than a back up WR. His best season was when he had 722 yards and 9 Tds. He had a few 600 yard seasons but nothing bigger. He also had a lot of injury problems. So I wouldn't compare him to Colston.

    • Right, so basically what I said in my first post about this last night. Tepper needs to use that big wallet of his in one of the few ways it can be used in the NFL given the cap.   Give Scourton a bigger signing bonus but not a fully guaranteed deal. Everyone wins in that scenario as if Scourton is smart and hires good money people, he'll take that bigger signing bonus and use it to make more money in the end over the next 4 years than if he just had his fully guaranteed deal and a smaller signing bonus.
    • It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ
