First World Problems

So this offseason, we're debating over how much to pay star players and the best approach to keeping the other good players on our roster together while continuing to improve.

Funny, but I seem to recall several past offseasons where the primary topics of conversation were things like "Good grief, how can we possibly fill all the holes we have? And we need to cut/bench/fire (insert name here) right now!"

As I recall, this wasn't all that long ago.

So am I being overly optimistic, or do folks here genuinely think we might just have turned the proverbial corner?

We still need a LT and another WR to truly make noise.  I feel good about the D.  Sure, it'd be nice to add another CB, another safety, and some depth along the DL, but LT and WR are our glaring holes.  Gettleman HAS to find a way to address them this offseason.  I don't care if it's draft, trade, or FA.  Gotta find KB a legit starting caliber NFL WR running mate and gotta get Cam some decent blindside protection.  Having to constantly help out Byron Bell really hamstrings our offense.

we need a LT, that is obvious. we need a physical #2 receiver. We need a kick returner. we need another DE if Hardy is gone. We need a safety. we need an OLB or two...one that can start this year and can replace TD eventually. we need a speedy physical corner. we need depth across both the Offensive and defensive lines and we could use a starting LG.

if we let Tolbert and Williams walk, we need a RB and a FB/TE.

thats about the gist of it

I like the overall direction this franchise is heading, but I have one thing that still bothers me.

Shula.

Fix that, get a legit offensive playcaller, and we can make some noise.

I'll grant the "we must dump this guy" conversation is still happening. But even so, it still strikes me as there being a more optimistic tone in here than in prior years.

Frankly, a waaaayyyy more optimistic tone than anyone would have expected around, say, week nine.

And that's part of what gets me. We had a nightmarish season up till the latter days, and yet few people even seem to remember that (or at least they're not talking about it much).

Yes, this is a good problem to have. My question is, seeing how we have hit on superstars the last few drafts, are we actually going to be able to pay these guys? Cam, Luke, Star and KB, how do we afford to keep all these guys when their contracts come due?

We should do the same that the seahawks have done. Lock up the Real core guys and keep drafting Well. I dont Think gettleman is the least bit shy about cutting ties with 'the old core' if push comes to shove and we have to make more difficult cap decisions

Those were dark times. Fans were turning on each other

I legitimately think we are going to make a Super Bowl run next year.  We have NO free agents to worry about re-signing (Norman, Cam are not musts, but they would be very nice).

This team has momentum, with 2 playoff berths in the past 2 years, 1 win and 2 losses.  Experience that matters.

Turner, Norwell, and Brown made this offense 1 offseason away.  Now all he needs is a starting T and WR.  Maybe another T to give us depth and provide competition for Remmers.   That is it.  Giving Cam time and weapons could turn the offense into a top 10 unit.  Throw in a top 5 defense (maintenanced by adding a CB and DT depth) and a new look special teams unit, this team could be elite.  4 - 5 key additions is all we need. (WR, OT, CB, RB, DT).  We could add a DE, but Addison, Alexander, Ealy, and Johnson is not bad.  SS is also a need, but a developmental player late in the draft + Colin Jones is enough for now.

The thing that excites me is the talent Gettlemen will find under rocks and in fire sales.  Our depth is getting better and better.

I have a prediction about which part of your post will get the most attention

To clarify, I think you mean "don't have to be re-signed/extended before the coming season starts". Am I correct, or off?

    • Yeah lol well the interest isn’t really about seeking stimulation.  I wanted to see how actually bad it was.  And how much of it was women setting him up to be their cash cow.  That is the stuff that leveraged the Panthers into David Tepper’s hands. It is important in that sense.     The worst that I have heard is that he got them in the car and clumsily reached across to help them with their seat belt and made contact. With his arm. That was probably his big slick move. And I can almost guarantee he wasn’t rejected every time. It is easy to picture that action bringing his head close enough to the woman’s head to where he could go in for the kiss if he thought he got the green light.    I really don’t care if JR was a horn dog. We heard all our lives up until the last few years that one of the perks of being really old is that you can flirt with the young women and it is not just tolerated but expected. So he was keeping a tradition alive at some point 😂
    • Well I rubbed some dirt on it and am still here just not optimistic about the future of the QB position. Even what I had accepted as a ceiling raised to an acceptable level turned out to be a bit of a mirage, upon rewatch of the WC game.  Good plays were there yes, but some pretty bad ones too that the good ones late in the game kind of obscured. I have to downgrade that a little.  Especially after rewatching the last 4 plays. I remember the arguments about he did his job the WRs didn’t but that was really just that last muff by Coker I think it was on our final offensive play.   To the future: I know what my level is for paying him and recommitting, but I don’t have any confidence that the team shares my high bar.    But thanks for the pep talk
