…anyway, fantastic thread, 10/10. this has gotten me more pumped for the upcoming season than anything in recent memory. his comments about oher are absolutely fantastic.

i honestly believe the free agents we've added, combined with the guys that came on as starters last year, make this a better team than we saw at the beginning of last season and even the end, and that's before we've even hit the draft. all our young nucleus guys like star and short and KB and cam and luke and norman are just gonna be that much better and no one except maybe harper should decline. throw in some complete kickass rookies hulk smashing special teams and giving cam a new array of targets (especially if we sign greg jennings omgomgomg) and holy fuging poo buckle in.

It is amazing how so many people fail to realize the actual production of the offense and defense fell last season while the teams that took the Panthers cast offs increased their production.

Like walking into a business that nose dived into the red following a great year and then seeing everyone with huge smiles on their face thinking positively about how well they have been doing, because their manager has a wonderful plan and talks everyone up as being exceptional talent.

Clearly you lost production somewhere and it was never replaced, and that is a huge issue that the GM must account for and remedy.

I wonder what those who see us on a downward spiral would have done as GM? Overpaid for FAs? Signed all the FAs? Traded all our bad players for draft picks? Cap be damned?

Fact is Gettleman works in the real world. While his plans are his, it's exciting as a fan to see bits and pieces. Heck, it's great we have a GM with a plan at all...

This year will be the make or break season for Rivera and Gettleman I think.

It's actually more like ↔️↗️↘️ At this point since he's gotten here. Let's be objective here, we went from 7-9, to 12-4, to 7-8-1. Applaud him all you want but you are what your record says you are. The game ain't played on paper, and despite back to back division titles, we've yet to put together back to back winning seasons.

And he said (and many here understood) that this was a three year turnaround project to get the team and salary cap right. He hit lightning in a bottle two years ago and we massively overachieved. That did not change the fact that this team had a lot to do to be fixed.

The fact that you can't comprehend that says way more about your understanding of business and football than it does about Gettleman's ability to do his job.

The team is actually on a downward trend compared to the rest of the NFL.

Read on if you want a bit of reality. Move along if you like to be overly optimistic and dream.

The following rankings and numbers are based on the simple rating system. This allows the comparison of teams from year to year relative to how they compared to the rest of their competition in a given season.

In the NFC alone you have 4 teams lower than the Panthers (12th) when it comes to production - Falcons, Bucs, Redskins and Bears. Lucky for the Panthers 2 of those teams are in the same division, and the Saints were the 11th ranked team in the NFC. All the teams in the NFC South fell below the NFL average. In the NFL, the Panthers rank 23rd.

The Panthers have only had 4 seasons in their history where they have finished below the NFL average on both defense and offense - 2014, 2010, 2007, and 2001. So, stop hanging your hat on a division championship to make you believe this team is on an upward trend. Any true Panther fan sees the company of those other teams and cringes.

The second largest decline in Panthers history came from 2013 to 2014. The team dropped 10 points. The only other downward trend that was larger was a 13.7 point decline from 2009 to 2010. When you consider the top teams in the NFL are around +10.0 a 10 point drop is a major decline.

In 2013, the Panthers had a foundation they built from 2011 and 2012 that led to the offense and defense both being above the NFL average. That has been dismantled and the pieces have been shipped to other teams to make those teams stronger and playoff favorites. The Panthers were among the top 4 teams in the NFL in 2013. It took 3 offseasons to create that. It took 1 offseason to tear it down. When you have a foundation and a system that works you keep it and tweak it like the perennial favorites do every season.

Greg Olsen, Jonathan Stewart, Kelvin Benjamin, Ricky Proehl, and Bene Benwikere have all made known their outlook on how offensive football is the most critical aspect to any team sport and how it needs to be addressed by the coaches and front office. And they are correct. Defense is about the system. Offense is about the players.

Right now the offense is too young and disorganized to make any real impact against a strong defensive team. The teams that produce on offense have their 3 or 4 players (excluding the QB) who are involved on at least 60% of the plays and produce 30+ TDs on the season between those players. The Panthers top four offensive weapons were involved in less than 49% of the offensive plays and produced 18 TDs. In 2013, the Panthers key offensive weapons accounted for more than 60% of the plays and 24 TDs. The Panthers need to choose their players to game plan around and lean on them every game. Stop this nonsense of using them as decoys in the first half of a game and then give the ball to players who just came in off the street or are undrafted rookies.

Who are your key skill players on offense? What receiver or running back can carry the team? The QB manages most of the game and makes plays to keep drives alive at key moments. Can Jonathan Stewart be Marshawn Lynch or DeMarco Murray? Can Greg Olsen be Gronk or Jimmy Graham? Can Kelvin Benjamin be Antonio Brown or Jordy Nelson? You need these players to step up and carry a bulk of the offense. There is a myth out there that a QB can carry a team. The strong offenses have 2 or 3 offensive players who carry the team and know they can get in the endzone. The QB is the X factor. This goes for Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Peyton Manning.

It is quite obvious what the problems are for the Panthers and the offensive players even know it. If you want to try to win with Philly Brown, Ed Dickson, and Fozzy Whittaker instead of leaning on your key talent, then the coaches are fools and you will be in for another losing season just like 2014.

considering we had to replace both starting tackles, without money to do so, plus the turn over on the receiving core, we did well. We still won the division.

The front office EXPECTED a drop due to the lack of money to fill the needs of the team as well as they wanted to.

But not the fans, the fans expected more dispite the fact of the high turnover and no money.

Then still p8ss and moan when the decline in production came as the team predicted it would.

But don't let that reality mess up your little world.

I heard the interview and it made me even more excited about the future of the team. One other item that I didn't see mentioned in this thread was something one of the other commentators mentioned about Michael Oher. I didn't get his name as I came in mid-interview, but he said he'd heavily scouted Oher before the draft as well, and that with the unstable background he comes from, moving to a new place, out of his comfort zone likely had a much stronger effect on him than it would with someone else. Coming back under the coaching of Matsko may really end up being a huge factor in whether he returns to form. I remember back when I read the original Blind Side article, the writer compared him to Orlando Pace. Hey, we can dream can't we? Haha.
