same as last year, Rivera says Cam has got to become a more sound QB

The people who continuously make every excuse for Cam sound JUST LIKE the Atlanta fans who made every excuse for Vick (about how he had no WR's).....then they get rid of Vick and bring in Ryan and he has stellar seasons WITH THE SAME WR's.

I agree that the Panthers need to upgrade the OL and bring in more speed at WR.

But, Cam did have an All Pro LT for all but last season....and he did have multple top tier RB's....and he did have Smitth.

So, to say he had no OL and weapons his entire career is jus that.....an excuse for every flaw that he needs to work on.

This coach and staff speaks VERY HIGHLY of Cam and definitely views him as a franchise QB and the future of the Panthers.  But, they are smart enough to see that Cam has many things to work on and improve for him to become elite....which is something that many in here are NOT smart enough to see.

Of course we can't have a thread about our franchise QB without someone mentioning Vick.

That wasn't the point I was trying to make. It was a mere part of it.

Newton was progressing very well by the end of the 2013 season. that's clear. 2014 he struggled at certain points, but he still shined once he was able to finally get healthy, gain some continuity with his entirely new WR core, and when our OL finally played well.

All of the factors that Newton dealt with in 2014 would have been difficult for any quarterback to overcome, let's not minimize that.

The sad part is: Newton was very good from the pocket his first year, and the read option only appeared situational or in sprinkling. He throws for almost 4100 yards.

First half of his second year, Chud went overboard with the Read Option and it effected Cam's numbers. Hurney gets fired, so Chud and Rivera get the message, and Cam plays damn near perfectly from the pocket the second half of the year (and throws 155 pass attempts without an INT). He throws for almost 3900 yards this year.

Third year Shula comes, and Cam throws less (the beginning of reducing his traditional QB role), while becoming more efficient with the excuse of a great defense that carried the team. He throws for 3100 yards. We can see the precipitous yardage decline.

4th year: Once again, Cam plays almost perfectly at QB to start the season (especially considering what was given to, and going on around him) for 4 games in a row after missing the first game. And then the increased emphasis on the read option, injuries, Shula going AWOL, and near death all combine to sabotage what could have been a potentially great season. Let's not even bring up the yardage.

So now (as it's been mentioned), people forget about his pocket exploits.Cam was more of a traditional pocket QB his first two seasons then he is now (not including the start of 2014, where he was). The running, read option never seemed to get in the way, it was always additional.

One of the problems: Shula/Rivera not allowing him to throw mostly from the pocket, where he's been successful. Too much read option and running (of course injuries last year, lack of deep receivers, inconsistent play calling from Shula), ultimately sabotaged Newton. I agree. Many times Shula never allows Cam to get into, or stay in a throwing Rhythm by calling a stupid running play out the blue. This is something the Panther OC and Head coach have never been consistent with (as in 1st half of his second year; 2nd half of his fourth year; relegating him to relative Game Manager Role in 2013).

2013 was his best QB rating, comp%, TD to int ratio. He also threw for more TD that year and had the best 3rd down rating in the league. . You know he did make the pro bowl as well..

So what was he bad at again?

You might want to check other QB 3rd season and compare before posting again. .

Remember, Cam has to be perfect in order to satisfy certain/many Huddler's. :startle:

Oh it doesn't. .

Than name me a QB who had great Mechanics playing behind a bad Oline, Not having a dependable running game and a below avg. Set of pass catching weapons? ?

And an OC who doesn't set him up for success by sticking with passing when he's in a rhythm or to get him in or. And who doesn't show short passes to start him off, then working his way to longer one after fooling the defense (which Shula rarely does).

He gets criticism outside of the huddle that is true. But here every comment is vehemently attacked by all of his fan boys like you. If people could acknowledge what I am sure he would be the first to admit, then there wouldn't be this back and forth so much.

Personal attacks = losing the argument.

But you know what? I'll take it. Please, lay that label on me.

Because it sure is a damned sight better than being a miserable POS bleeding pessimistic whiner.

Has anyone figured out how anyone can expect any QB to be fundamentally sound when he has been running for his life most of his career?

I think it wise to provide him with a NFL caliber offensive line for at least a full season before nitpicking his technique.

OHMIGOD!

Zod is saying Cam is perfect, never makes mistakes, and doesn't need to improve!

FANBOY!

:P

I love people who criticize others for personal attacks and equate that to losing and then do the same thing 3 sentences later.  First of all fanboy is hardly a personal attack and your avatar and attitude show you came to this boy due to Cam which is what a fan boy is.  Secondly if you make a personal attack which is more negative than you receive, does that make you the biggest loser?

That would mean something to me if PFF was reliable for offensive line grades, which it isn't.

I'll stick to watching the product on the field.

Yeah, that line is "good", or at least.... special.

Cherry pick much?  So If I find 2 plays where they do fine, then do I win??  This is pretty weak even for you.

So what? You're attitude is *exactly* as I described as well. Like I said, I'll proudly wear "fanboy" while you can claim "pusillanimous pessimist".

What are you going to follow up with now, Peewee? "I know you are but what am I?"

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
