FSU DL Mario Edwards "plays with instincts that cannot be taught and, regardless if he can drop back as a linebacker, has the ability to cause trouble anywhere along the defensive line," wrote NFLDraftScout.com's Frank Cooney.

"He has an impressive combination of strength and instincts that enabled him to be a force both as an edge-setter against the run, and an inside power rusher threatening the pocket," Cooney wrote. "Edwards even dropped back as a 3-4 linebacker, but considering he fights to keep weight down that shouldn't be a long-term game plan." Edwards weighed in at 279 pounds at the combine. He's extremely strong for that size. "Two seventy-nine is good," Edwards said when asked about his weight. "I'd like to stay here or get to about 285, 288-ish. That's when I'm able to go inside and go against guards or I can do an end at a five-technique. I'm more versatile that way."

Would you rather look at this guy or Owamagbe in the 1st/2nd round as a defensive end?

I love taking a DE in the 1st or 2nd round.  We will have a little bit a patch on our O-Line and what if M Oher does do well.  We have locked into two seasons already.  Anything I repeat anything is better than Bell and now our line will have time to mesh together during OTAs and pre season workouts and training camp.  We shall see.  KEEP POUNDING!

He's quicker than you think he is, but he never has been nor ever will be a great pass rusher.

I think he's destined to become a 3-4 DE, but he does have the flexibility to play inside and out that Rivera loves.

Minor injury concerns and lack of ability to consistently get after the QB push him down to the second I think.

I'll never forget how he kept Nick Marshall in check though.

I rather take Preston Smith who can stop the run and pass rush.

P.S. Your standards for the OL should be high as the DL if you ever want the Panthers to win a Superbowl!

I've always liked Edwards but I feel there are better DEs that we can get in later rounds such as Preston Smith or Trey Flowers. I feel Micheal Bennet, Eddie Goldman, Edwards, and Arik Armstead are all good defensive linemen and probably will be good NFL players but I believe they could be drafted higher than their value because of the teams they are on.

I am of the mindset that, if we draft a rookie DE, we are looking for leverage in the Johnson situation.

CBS--Though still raw with substantial room to continue to get better, Edwards has the makeup of the ideal 3-4 end or 4-3 tackle who can disrupt the backfield in a number of ways, from multiple spots, and should draw a premium pick come draft day next year if he's able to continue developing at his current trajectory.

I kind of disagree with that.  If he works on his first step, keeps his weight around 275-280, he can play LDE.   Here is another quote from the same piece about Edwards:

CBS-

Since his first start in the 2012 ACC championship game when he replaced an injured Tank Carradine at right end, Edwards has demonstrated an impressive combination of athleticism, strength and instincts that have enabled him to be a force both as an edge-setter against the run, and a power rusher who can threaten the pocket inside or out against the pass.

Now, consider what we do.  On first down, even at RE, Edwards holds down the edge vs run and power rushes the pass.  On second or third down, he could slide inside and we could bring in Addison or Ealy.

I personally think we need a NT (not sold on Cole at 64 years of age  ), but this move could kill 2 birds.

By the way, CBS has him ranked as the 69th player overall, 8th DE.  That makes him a second rounder for us.

I would say late second early third. People pay for pass rushers and that's what he is lacking.

My standards as high as anyone else for our team but not every team or even every superbowl winning team has a great DL and a great OL.  Thanks to the salary cap.  Just my two cents.  KEEP POUNDING.

Yea but I believe no Superbowl team also had bottom 5 tier OL either. Our philosophy is Defense and Running the ball, which relies heavily on controlling the line of scrimmage. If your aim is playoffs and superbowl, then it shouldn't be a issue if we don't find a starting LT right away, getting a RT is as important . Ex. Anthony Davis and the 49rs

    • Winning culture trumps ALL.    Here’s my way to long take:  Last season this team started out breaking the sports books and being the lead pipe lock of the week. They finished by being a tough out for both SB teams.  I don’t think they’ll pick up right where they left off, but for the first time in years they’re on the legitimate upswing. Honest to God NFL talent has been infused.  Offense is already going to be good for 2-3 more 3rd down conversions (I don’t think anyone will argue that) a game over last year so I’ll go (very optimistically) 5-6 more points better than last year’s team. ADDED: A legit backup RB and a money WR who catches everything, along with 2 promising rooks. No significant losses (sorry Miles). KEYS: Can Dave bob and weave play calling if things aren’t working? Does protection continue to hold for Bryce. Did this team pick up dudes who know how to find the end zone or will the struggle of 3rd and goal continue.  Defense. If they can force even 2 (hopefully 3) more stops a game on third down (not asking a lot, hopefully more), that’s good for -4 (optimistic) points for opposing teams.  ADDED: legit run stuffers. Legit (appearing) edge guys. LOST: Clowney. Question: With legit 3-4 talent can Evero finally show what we have been VERY patiently waiting on? To me, EVERYTHING on defense hinges on Evero. Everything. Every position group was upgraded (still not good enough, but certainly improved).  Losing Brown early and Luvu… completely and utterly devastated the run defense. Luvu put up one of the best seasons at LB this team has ever seen. His under appreciation by some fans was criminal. He alone was our 3 down stop machine. Brown was pretty much it up front. Those 2 held RBs in check long enough for safety help to arrive.  Coaching: Halftime adjustments and no prevent defense. In a nutshell, that’s pretty much it. No cutesy offense to show off WRs/Bryce when it’s not working. Use your sledgehammers, Dave.  There is finally veteran leadership and legit NFL talent. It’s going in the right direction (I couldn’t have been more wrong last offseason) to build a winning culture, but teams have to learn how to win, especially the games where nothing is going right (this team has NEVER been able to do that). They will still lose more close games than they win, and that alone is where it all hinges.
    • With his current level of play I'm quite content to not activate his 5th year option and let him walk away for free after year 4.
    • Self described anti-Bryce dude wants us to fail to take a major step forward     Yeah that lines up.
