Advise Hurney on what to do here

Let's say you get to sit in Marty Hurney's plush office for a few days. How would you handle this dilemma? Everybody knows we desperately need a DT so would you -

Option 1.....Wait until after the cuts to see who is available. The risk of doing this is every other team that is looking for a DT will also pounce on any player of quality and we all know the Panthers can't win a bidding war with our cap situation. Waiting until after the cuts could leave us holding an empty bag and heading into this season with a glaring weakness on the d-line. Something every team we play will try to exploit.

or

Option 2.... Trade a player or draft picks from next year and secure the exclusive services and negotiating rights to a player you know will help your team this year. It's definitely mortgaging our future because we are already low on draft picks next year. It guarantees your team getting a player that can help your team now but it will also come at a high cost in picks/players.

Some people might say wait until after the cut down day and if we can't get a player we need via the cuts, then make try to make a trade. I'm not sure a team that is looking to make a trade will do that because once a team gets down to 53 - then makes a trade and is now at 52 players - will have to go back to players that were already cut and could possibly be picked up on waivers by another team. If a team is making a trade, they would want to know the 53 players they can keep before cut day.

So....what would you do to resolve this situation?

Dear Marty,

Please do not be drinking any liquid that could cause harm if spewed through your nose onto your computer when reading any of the ideas on here.

Thanks,

Del

If you don't like any ideas posted here, why don't you offer up some sage advice on how you would handle things?

Trade a 2nd or a 3rd for a quality starting DT and then at the end of the yr franchise Pep and trade him for draft picks to compensate for the lost picks we traded. (maybe a 1st and a 3rd, two seconds, etc.) That'd kill 2 birds with one stone as we'd get back some much needed picks and we'd be shedding his enormous cap number and allowing us to target more FA's and strengthen our team in some of the weaker areas.

Lots of ifs in that idea tho... like Pep actually signing his tender instead of waiting till the last minute so he can get paid a redic amount of money next year.

John Czarnecki's advice

5. DT Anthony Montgomery to the Panthers: Ever since the Panthers lost mountain man Maake Kemoeatu at defensive tackle, GM Marty Hurney has been looking for a big replacement. Washington's Montgomery is 6-foot-6, 320 pounds and very unhappy about being demoted from the starting lineup with the arrival of Albert Haynesworth.

If the Packers release Justin Harrell, the Panthers would also probably give the bad-back former No. 1 pick a look.

I think it's simple. Trade our third for Hampton. At the end of the year trade Peppers for two number one picks, and then bundle them with Delhomme and trade up to the top spot where we get Bradford. Sign Hampton to a multiyear deal where he and Kemo can stay fresh and trade our second round pick for Haynesworth, who disappointed in Washington. Then trade Stewart to New York for Osi, and use the money freed up by Peppers to get the best receiver in FA.

It's really simple, why doesn't Hurney just do it? :)

    • There are several posters that only post negative at all times.   8 wins is a big jump from 5 and we still have 2 games.  Jaguars have a much more talented roster than us and have underachieved for years.
    • All of this noise is just setting us up to lose Week 18 and proclaim life's not fair. If there's one thing I know in my 30+ years of watching the Hornets and Panthers, is that the bad guy always wins in the end. A team can be falling apart internally but we will still lose to them. A team's fanbase can be extra shitty and cocky and they will just win anyway. It always happens
    • Well even if we took diverging paths getting there...our overall assessment of Shough is the same (bolded) lol so I guess that's what matters.  What you call "playing at a level that looks like a veteran starter" is the same thing I'm referencing when I talk about his poise.  Although I still wonder how truly "bad" of a team the Saints are.  Their defense is middle-of-the-road, and their offense does have some good pieces (Olave, Juwan Johnson) outside of running back which is the position most everyone agrees is relatively plug-and-play.  I'm not going to pretend to know anything about the majority of NFL team's o-lines lol but I'm assuming Saints are not great there, although Shough's pressure % seems to have been quite low (and steadily improving) over the last four weeks (20 -> 16.7 -> 15.0 -> 13.0) so maybe they've been playing better as of late, or perhaps Shough himself deserves credit for that.   Some of the language I'm hearing about Shough, including talking about how he's way above league average in several categories, makes it sound like Shough is having a rookie season on par with like a CJ Stroud who established himself as basically a Top 5-10 QB his rookie season.  Maybe that's on me though, I don't mean to attribute anything to you that I'm sure you don't agree with.
