That last part is key I think. People love to talk about 40 times in regards to receivers, but never talk about football smarts. Being a great receiver in the NFL means so much more than just being fast, you need to understand the game.

Apparently the Panthers were impressed not only with his size, but his football smarts as well.

Btw, according to the Panthers website he ran a 4.47 at his pro day, which is more than quick enough for his size.

This means, the Panthers can integrate him faster/smoother into their offense.

 

Another receiver,  could be the most talented athletically. However, if he couldn't learn the offense and where the pass rush and secondary  were, it wouldn't mean squat! :thumbsd:

 

Now when you combine his size, decent athletically abilty, and WR talents,  you can understand why DG may have felt this way. 

 

Until proven otherwise, if DG's fine with it/him, so will I. :cool:

Gettleman talked about smarts with Shaq too. He said every decision he makes has to benefit the team in the short run and long run. So while Shaq and Devin might not be finished products. Their intelligence and talent will allow them to contribute while they develop.

 

Forget the 40 time with Devin. He's explosive. His vertical and broad blew Kelvin away. They are both big but that is where the comparisons stop for me.

Either the kid isn't smart enough, or doesn't love it enough.  You have to be both to be successful.

It's probably everything we mentioned. :startle:

 

The 'word' is, he can't catch. However, not being able to catch is not always about stone hands. He may actually have good hands in isolation. Not being able to pick up the blitz, corners, pass rushes, and routes may confuse him enough to where he's lost on the play, and/or can't concentrate enough to catch the ball.

 

Also, a lot of speed guys, can't cut and always run routes the best, relying mostly on their speed. Problem is; once NFL DB's back off of you, and/or play you physically, speed and finesse guys may not like it.  :sick:

Big height, smarts and explosiveness's, usually a good combination. :thumbsu:

      Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.

      I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
