I hated the Mayo pick, but can't wait to see him "tag (some) fanny"

Dave Gettleman must love some Mayo, adding to an already arguably deep stable of quality linebackers as opposed to addressing another position of need.  But after reading the AP's Steve Reed's article, there's definitely enough depth to David Mayo to see why Gman drafted him.

If nothing else, David Mayo is driven. You can see it in in the way that he decided to take the road less traveled and earn a better scholarship while living in a basic shed, furnished with little more than a mattress, while attending community college in Cali. I guess there are worse places to further your education and play football than Santa Monica, but having the only electricity provided by an extension cord that you ran from your landlord's house, as well as no running water, would get quite old for most of us.  That being said, he met his objectives of earning the attention of a D1 school, went on to Texas State and made the impression that he knew he could make.  He bet on himself, and a man that bets on himself and wins is not a man that you likely won't to bet against.

"It was pretty crazy, but it was where I felt that I needed to play to earn my Division I scholarship that I felt I deserved," Mayo said. "I knew I could play at (that level). I just did whatever it took."

GMs obviously knocked Mayo for playing in the Sun Belt Conference, but Mayo still showed up like a "boss" (the same word he referenced Luke Kuechly) by amassing  an amazing 154 tackles his last year at the school.  He had to be tagging a lot of fanny to get to that number, a lot of fanny indeed.

Mayo was obviously a men among boys, and even though I still believe that he'd have been available after the draft and would have signed with the Panthers, I guess Dave Gettleman didn't want to take any chances.  Mayo looks to be part of Gman's recipe for success.

OTAs: May 26-28, June 2-4, June 8-11

Minicamps: June 16-19

Going on last year, Fanfest will probably kick off training camp in the last week of July through to mid August.

Not sure you can go by next year.

Fan Fest was pushed up because of that soccer game at BOA that took place on the traditional fan fest date.

Probably back to normal this year.

There's another game (Chelsea v PSG) on July 25th this year too, guessing FF wont be before then?

Well, JR wanted Panthers fans to be the first to see the new features at BofA. If FF had been at it's normal times, the soccer fans would have had first dibs.

That isn't the case this year.

I'd say fan fest will be the second saturday of training camp as it was for years.

Ah got it, forgot about the BofA improvements last year. So TC probably starting last week of July, FF second week of August?

    • I feel like this trade just lives rent free in people's heads and keeps morphing into different things. First thing is that the rumored trade was for future firsts. They wouldn't have any extra picks in 2023; the firsts would have been for 2024 and 2025. With very few exceptions, NFL GMs don't value picks that far away. You have to have a lot of job security to pull that off. Like Chiefs, Eagles, Rams kinda stability. That's obviously not the case with David Tepper, especially since he'd just fired his head coach. No GM except for like Howie Roseman is going to trade an asset you have now for a future asset you probably get to use.  Second, at the time you'd have to assume these are first rounders late in the first round. Obviously currency is currency and the panthers need young players, but these weren't slam dunk top ten picks. At the end of the day there's one pick that separates a first and second round pick.  Lastly, the only place that ever reported this trade was the Rams. All the reporters just repeated what McVay said and it became gospel. We have no idea how serious the negotiations were, if they ever really happened, if the offer was real, etc. And I personally believe McVay and Sneed are the kind of guys who would make up rumors like that to fug up other teams, mostly because I assume if I've thought of it someone smarter than me has.  I don't know how you'd call it the greatest draft haul of all time. Firsts quickly lose their value the farther out they are and Burns had 16.5 sacks last season. And anyway those picks would probably just been tossed into the burning inferno of the Bryce trade up so it's a moot point anyway.
