Pocket Cam vs. Mobile Cam

The injuries started the middle of the season.  For the most part, Cam had the same offensive line throughout the beginningarrow-10x10.png of the year.  When he was passing well from the pocket, and when he was running (Bengals game).

From what I recall, things started going downhill week 3.

I don't know what the definition of "same offensive line" is to you, but different starting lineups is not the "same offensive line". I'm not sure if you are completely understanding the importance of guys developing chemistry with one another on the OL, but it's pretty critical to the success of an offense, and we had several different lineups by the end of the season.

He had "the same OL" at the beginning of the season, but that OL sucked. His being a better passer at the beginning of the season is even more of a testament to the point of his thread BECAUSE he was doing it with an even worse OL at the beginning of the season than what he had at the end.

Let's also not forget how Shula went full Shula with his game planning and play calling halfway through the year. Trying to get too cute and having the receivers run elaborate time consuming routes while Cam stood behind broken Turnstiles.

When they let Cam run no huddle and an uptempo offense they ran quicker plays that developed sooner.

I will always hate Shula for his dumbassery last year. It was like he ignored the personnel he was given and decided to try and make a square peg fit in a round hole no matter what.

when this first came out as a BBR hypothesis, I didn't like it either.  Yes, early 2014 Cam was a better passer than mid 2014 Cam, and there was a conspicuous lack of running there for obvious reasons in the early portion.

But, Cam broke rookie records as a passer and rusher at the same time.  Negating his first three years to suggest that injured Cam is better than healthy Cam, I don't agree with that.   Mid-14 Cam had no running game around him, no protection, a defense that was suddenly starting to fail him, no special teams, and no receiving depth.   That Cam pressed (all the desperation throws v/s first NO), tried to do too much.  Which is fully the opposite of what he'd built himself into by mid-2012.

That's the difference, to me. And he settled down when his team came together.

If you want to argue that limiting his carries helps his health, maybe, but he wasn't healthy through either early '14 or after he started running.  It limits what a defense accounts for, if he's not a threat.  It limits who he is.

I'd agree that if you handcuff a QB who can run, you lessen the threat against the defense.  The threat should always be there even if, over time, the number of actual runs naturally decreases.  The last few years of John Elway provide a good example for me.

I do suggest that you spend more time coaching him as a passer than you do as a runner because his passing skills are what's going to determine his long term success.  Heck, good running doesn't require as much coaching and practice as good passing, anyway.

So bottom line: Emphasize passing in the coaching department while you also solidify an offensive line to protect the pocket and you've got a blueprint for success regardless of how much or how little he runs in the future, but don't take the designed runs out.  The threat needs to be there to keep defenses on their heels.

I was just curious what was cams numbers from games 11-16 (14 if you count the two games he missed.)

The reason why I ask is because that is when we went on a winning streak and I believe it is when we had replaced Amini and Chandler with Norwell and Reamers. Also Stewart went on a tear.

    • I mean, first of all, I'm not the one who initially said he was a life long fan, it was in that tweet in the OP. But more importantly, "life long fan" is a relative term, especially for a franchise like the Panthers.  I think anyone who was say, 10-12 or younger when the franchise started, and been a fan since the start, could claim to be a life long fan. I'm 38, been a fan of the team since year 1 even though I'm not even from the Carolinas, after almost 30 years of fandom and following them since the beginning, I have no issue saying I'm a life long Panthers fan. Very possible his dad is say around 40 years old and been a Panthers fan since the start.  And even if he's a little older, if you're a fan of a team for 30 out of your say 45ish years of life... that's "life long" in that instance.
