Peter King loves the Newton Deal

Recommended Posts

Rather than bitch about Peter King, I wish people would actually discuss what was said.

This is something that really caught my eye:

3. Newton is a beacon for the unobsessed quarterback, and a bright one. Now, I wouldn’t pay him for this reason, so maybe this is a misplaced point here. But I was struck last summer talking to Newton about how he was different from most of the quarterbacks playing at the top level of football now, and most of the young quarterbacks coming up behind him. Those quarterbacks, mostly, were products of a pipeline of summer coaching and fall coaching and winter coaching, and of spring and summer seven-on-seven football leagues that emphasize endless throwing and catching with college-prospect receivers. Newton, for the most part, didn’t have that growing up in Atlanta. He had a lot of catching up to do so he could compete against quarterbacks with better coaching and better off-season throwing programs. That’s why I think his best football, without question, is ahead of him.

To me, this really points to what Cam can be as long as he works hard, and if there's one thing he's shown in his time here it's that he's a very hard worker.  So, I fully expect Cam to develop into the kind of QB that most in the media say he is not...a great passer at all levels.  Because of that, along with his natural running ability, I see him as a transcendent QB that can and will be able to do things that nobody that has come before him could have dreamed about.

IMO, the biggest problem he has had thus far is what was put around him.  He simply hasn't had the resources to truly maximize his potential.  But now we have 4 of 5 legitimate OL in front of him (and maybe 5 if Oher finds himself again), two quality starting receivers along with some quality potential as depth, a great defense that is only getting better, and a ST unit that should be an advantage rather than a hindrance.  All the pieces are finally in place for him for the first time since he came to Carolina.  I think Cam, along with the entire offense, will be a huge surprise to the league this year.  As a result, I think we will be a team nobody wants to play...particularly in the playoffs!!!

It's actually a very good point.

    • Rags lost again. All is right in the hockey world.
    • He’s responsible for two drafts classes. The first was one of the worst drafts I’ve ever seem. The second one is showing a ton of promise. I’m somewhere between skeptical and hopeful on Morgan.
    • I'm a big fan of Dan. His ability to find productive players deep in the draft will pay off.  I'm going to give him 1.5 draft classes right now, because I do think it's a little unfair to evaluate his first year when he got the job in January, especially when we went into that draft not having a first round pick.  XL and Brooks are still big time TBD players. Both still have incredibly high ceilings, but both have also given us legitimate reasons to have a lot of pause. Trevin Wallace, Chau Smith Wade and Jatavion Sanders have IMO outplayed their draft position early in their careers. That's a great thing. He also got Coker and Demani Richardson as UDFAs that year. Given the situation we were in, I really don't mind the gamble on the high ceiling guys. Still may work out, still may not, but if you made a checklist of ideal situation for an NFL GM to walk into, ours was near the bottom of that list.  Every single 2025 pick is contributing in some way. That typically doesn't happen. I am absolutely blown away by this draft class 6 games in. Even the best GM's miss on occasion, and we can't expect Dan to be 100% on drafts moving forward. Ryan Fitzgerald was an excellent find as well.  Comparing our last two drafts to the previous few is pretty shocking. Can you imagine this season without our Rookies? It would not be good. Additionally, this roster only has 6 players with more than 6 years of experience, and two of those are specialist.  The next step is equally important, and still very much TBD. We have to avoid Cap Chaos.
