are you ok with cutting moore? that's who he's replacing. We haven't had a solid number 3 since prohel was here, and down the road who knows maybe he could be a number 2. It's out of the question for me.

Mark Jones was actually better in punt returns with us last season than he was on kick returns. He lead the NFC in Punt Return Yardage and was 3rd in the conference in Average among players with 35 or more returns.

You don't really use the wedge on Punt Returns, as it is impossible to set up. You just put a hat on a hat. That part of the game didn't change.

Kick return is a thing that most anybody can do. The ball is easier to catch because it's going end over end and there is no immediate pressure. Punt returning takes more finesse. Making the first guy miss has nothing to do with speed, but rather being shifty and allowing the speed of the pursuit to pass you. From what we saw last night, we don't have anybody on the roster that can field them cleanly. It would be worth a phone call to see what Jones has.

It isn't necessarily that simple. Just because you add a WR doesn't mean you have to cut a WR especially when we're only slated to carry four of them. There are plenty of guys that are going to make the roster primarily for their special teams play. He could be added at the expense of one of those guys.

Additionally, I wouldn't say it's totally certain that Jarrett keeps his roster spot. I think it would be a mistake, but he's hardly a slam dunk.

That is because forward thinking in regards to moving away from something that worked does not always represent progress, it just represents different. Mark Jones did a fantastic job at returning kicks of all kinds for this squad last season and in a field position offense that is critical.

I apologize if muffing three punts per game for the sake of being progressive is acceptable by your standards.

He hasn't been back there a whole lot, but that is the thing.... it's a whole different animal than kick returning. You have ZERO time to read and diagnose on punt returns. It's catch, hope you don't get creamed, and then the next four or five seconds is all reaction time dodging 250 lb. bullets. That is why these guys fumble. They're trying to cheat and get a glance at the coverage before the ball gets there to make sure they're not about to get splattered. It takes some major intestinal fortitude to take punts.

I completely agree with you....What's wrong with discussing released players that can possibly help your team? The fact that they once played for the Panthers isn't really relevant. I guess bringing back Mushin Muhammad or Dante Wesley is very forward thinking.

That is true that being thin hurts too, esp. if the injury bug bites us in the regular season like it has so far this offseason and pre-season... but...

We saw in 2008 how HUGE the return game is on both sides... when the other team starts on the 40 yard line every time we kickoff, our defense gets slaughtered, hence Mr. Rhys Lloyd...

When we fumble punts and end up on the 5 yard line OR even worse, turn the ball over on our end of the field, we get killed...

Mark Jones, IMO, was a big reason we went 12-4 last year... consistency in the return game. He wasn't huge, didn't have big returns, but consistently got the ball past the 20 and didn't fumble or muff kicks...
