BBR posted a very interesting link over the weekend in their round up of recent links (http://blackandbluereview.com/links-you-may-have-missed-july-12/)

It provides a statistical analysis in a graphical color-coded format to show each team's winning percentage (percentile ranking) in a given season and over time.

Here is a screen shot of the Panthers' chart  (It's best to go to the original link, however, because there, if you hover over a specific triangle or diamond, more data shows up.):

I found it interesting to use this chart to review the Panthers' best-ever REGULAR SEASON records over a 1 to 5 year period, and to see how this upcoming season could affect our results.

  • Best-ever 1 year (16 game regular season) results:  12 - 4  (1996, 2008, 2013)
  • Best-ever 2 year record:  20 - 12 (2008-2009)
  • Best-ever 3 year record: 29 - 19  (2003 - 2005)
  • Best-ever 4 year record:  38 - 26 (2005 - 2008)
  • Best-ever 5 year record:  46 - 34  (2005 - 2009)

If we were to go 12 - 4 this year as some (like Eugene Robinson) predict, that would mean:

tied for the best 1 year record.,

just short of the best 2 year record at 19-12-1

a NEW best-ever 3 year record of 31-16-1

a NEW best-ever 4 year record of 38 - 25-1

just short of the best 5 year record at 44-35-1

We'd also set a new best 10 year record of 81-78-1.

 

Here's hoping we start seeing a LOT more blue in the coming years on this chart.  I think the Panthers are poised for a great winning run over the next few years.  Let's do it!

By the way, one thing I didn't mention, was that it was only last season for the first time ever that the Panthers eeked out a winning 10 year record, thanks to the tie against the Bengals.  Our 7-8-1 record last year brought our running 10-year record to 80-79-1.

from 2004 - 2013 we were at .500  (80-80)

and in 4 separate 10 year periods (99-08; 00-09; 02-11, 03-12) we were just under .500 at 79-81.

we're currently 158-174-1 overall, including playoffs.  Looks like 2+ seasons until we're over .500 as a franchise.

NFCS Overall Records

  • Panthers: .473
  • NO: .442
  • Atlanta: .432
  • Tampa: .385

I'm assuming these numbers aove cover each Franchise's entire history?  I thought it might be better to look at each team's record over the past 20 years since the Panthers were formed, from 1995 - 2014.   Obviously, the divisions were different prior to 2002 and the creation of the NFCS.  If it would be helpful, I could look at the records just since 2002 within the NFCS.

I hope my quick research & calculations are accurate, but here's what I come up with.

yes, I posted the overall numbers. I started posting overall numbers last year, doing a countdown to .500, which didn't make any progress. :( Thought this discussion was a good place to bring it back up. trying to add to the discussion, not divert it.

Mother Grabber, thanks.  Didn't think you were diverting the discussion.  The stats you posted are interesting, I was just trying to make sure I knew what years they covered.  Here's the breakdown for the results since the creation of the NFC South in 2002:

One more statistic for the curious...  I thought it was interesting to go back and look at the records for the 1st 20 years of each NFCS franchise.  The Panthers in this case totally outclass the rest of our division.  Of course the NFL has changed a lot over the years, so I'm not sure this is really an "apples to apples" comparison, but still, we've gotten off to a much better start than our rivals did.

Continuing my procrastination this evening, here's a roundup of all 32 NFL teams regular season records over the past 20 years.  Forgive me if this is old news to many.  I just had a lot of fun playing with that infographic/chart and being able to see each NFL team's records for different periods.  I'm fairly new to NFL geekery & stats.

It's incredibly striking how much parity there is among the 4 NFC South teams in the past 20 years, though obviously these records pre-date the creation of the NFC South in 2002.
