interesting thing about Kalil's contract

Captain Morgan

there's been a couple of mentions here about cutting Ryan next year to save 4.3 mill on the cap.  However, we have him on contract for about 4 mill for 2 more seasons after that.  He's only 30, and centers can be very effective at the age of 34.

                                                                                                                                                                  (if cut)

2015$5,366,000$6,179,000$0$250,000$0$11,795,000 $12,116,000($321,000)
2016$7,500,000$2,579,000$0$250,000$0$10,329,000 $5,937,000$4,392,000
2017$1,000,000$2,579,000$0$0$0$3,579,000 $3,358,000$221,000
2018$1,000,000$779,000$0$0$0$1,779,000 $779,000$1,000,000

Even with extending Cam, Luke, and Greg, we can afford to keep Ryan for 3 more years.    This contract was done one month after Dave Gettleman was hired in January of 2013.  It was one of his first moves.  It also hopefully keeps our center, while allowing us a lot of cap space for Star and KK.

"On February 20, 2013 the Panthers restructured Kalil’s contract by dropping his 2014 base salary to $855,000 and instead paying him a prorated bonus of $3,895,000. The team added a voidable contract year in 2018 for salary cap relief."

Yeah, I've been saying this (though not as detailed) for a while in response to all the people talking about cutting Kalil after this season for cap purposes.  Lol it makes absolutely no sense.  After next year we have him for peanuts and he'll still only be 31.  Centers regularly play effectively all the way into their mid-30s.

Jeff Saturday retired at 35, and was still effective.

I'd expect extensions for Kalil and CJ this off-season that cuts a few million off next year's cap hit. Savings used to help extend Norman. Don't see us breaking up the band when that's a way we can keep it together

IIRC 2017 and 2018 for Kalil are just voidable years added for earlier cap relief like we did with Jordan Gross, that's why I say contract extension when it appears he's already under contract

I've heard CJ won't be back next year. We will see

I think more and more we start seeing smarter lineman walk away from the game sooner than they did years ago....especially ones that have been well paid.  No point in playing past your prime at some of these spots if you hit big paydays IMO

Next year could easily be Kalil's last season.  Kinda sets up and puts him right where Gross was.

He's still under 30 years old, his cap hit drops by $5 million next year, and Gettleman loves him some pass-rushers. IIRC, CJ may have only had 8.5 sacks last year, but he led the league in QB hurries. I'm expecting him to be here next year.

yep, but at least we won't get killed by dead money.  Notable that Kalil and Gross are good friends.

    • As I say that, Arch throws a 83 yard TD to Livingstone lol.
    • As bad as Arch was in game 1 vs Ohio State. I'm watching them continue to drop passes against San Diego State today un game 2 lol. Arch got insanely unlucky with the amount of talented WRs that Texas had ALL left before he started. Couple years ago they had Adonai Mitchell and Xavier Worthy, last year they had Matthew Golden and Isaiah Bond. This year they have Ryan Wingo and Parker Livingstone lol. Wingo (6'2" 214 lbs) is only a Sophomore that had 472 receiving yards in his only season played last year.  Livingstone (6'4" 191 lbs) looks like a redshirt freshman.  Not having veteran WRs from the past few seasons means there's gonna be some growing pains for them this year.
    • As much as this article has shocked me with how bad everything seems over in Chicago, it has made me that much more of a fan of Jayden Daniels. They cover how he's the first in the building, that Bobby Wagner sees him as a long-lost little brother due to his work ethic + approach to personal improvement, and how he used some German VR thing at x1.75 NFL speed to work on his progressions leading into the season. That's awesome. But in Chicago... Damn, Kyler catching strays too
