hmmm want to find the root of the Saints fast downfall?

They only have 17 players on their roster that they drafted, and of those 17,  seven were drafted this year.

Why is it sudden? They were 7-9 last year, down 4 wins from the year before.

The main root of the Saints decline is the decline in Brees' play with the increase in his salary cap figure. As he's lost his skills, they've been unable to surround him with the talent to compensate, primarily due to his salary cap hit. Still and Graham, all great draft picks, had to be traded due to financial realities.

They sold out last year for one more run and now are paying for it.

what sucks most for them is they couldn't even keep it together after investing all that treasure and mortgaging the future.

I didnt say sudden, i said fast. And that's because their expectations last year and this were still pretty high.

Brees' decline is his bad line, lack of weapons that fit the system and a terrible defense. Plus they are spending their money on high priced FA's that end up not working out or just injured.

I have  a list in front of me on how they were built, and I will just list draft picks because we all know that the draft is the best place to get long term players:

2009: 1 and thats the punter

2010: 0

2011: 1

2012: 1

2013: 3

2014: 1, how the hell is there only one from last year?

2015: 7, depending on rookies to help carry the team is no bueno.

Hell maybe they weren't wrong

That was an impressive showing by McCown fueled by a great gameplan that gave him easy reads and got the ball out of his hands quick. We were playing a loose zone coverage like we really didn't know what to expect and his mobility allowed him to evade pressure.

Now that the rest of the league has the Saints/McCown gameplan on tape, we'll see how he does.

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
