This week in...why PFF Grades are whack

Way too many people act like these guys preach the gospel.  With Aaron Rodgers' earlier negative rating when he had a great game and now this, it's clear their QB scoring system is completely broken.  Hell, they used to knock Luke too, then evidently they changed their system for LBs and he started walking on water.  No, he was the same player, they just fixed their shoddy system.

too subjective.  Cam Newton could throw a 80 mph fastball right past a defenders head for a TD.  PFF could say well that defender simply did a horrible job and in reality should have turned around 1 second sooner and if he did that ball should of been picked.  Negative grade for Newton on the 30 yard TD winner.

It isn't like there is an objective process for it.  One of their staff  members  watches a game and he makes opinions.  What is that person's qualifications?  I mean, I could breakdown every play of DeAngelo tonight....how is he gonna grade if I get to put my spin on everything he does and not the actual result?

CRA's career grade for Deangelo: negative nine thousand.

PFF logic applied by CRA.

Event:  DeAngleo runs for a 45 yard TD tonight.

PFF CRA Evaluation:  First, the RT and RG and FB totally set Williams up and got him to the outside.  They get good grades for that, RB at this point doesn't really factor.  Now, once he passes the line of scrimmage the defender took at horrible angle and slipped trying to back track.  Bad grade for the defender.  Any decent defender blows him up and Williams likely fumbles.  I mean it was gift wrapped once Williams was past his blockers for the defense.  Williams at this point has done nothing.  Okay, so at this point Williams is 20 yards downfield...and look at him....totally being careless with that ball.  Defender could easily knock that ball out.  Negative points.  Oh wait, see that bobble as he pointlessly hurdled over that defender?  That is the second time he was careless on this run and risked a turnover on a play totally setup by everyone else.  -.87 points for that TD run.  Why would you ever rest Bell with that slop.

grading a qb is tough. for example a qb could throw an easy pick in the redzone and the DB drop it. that doesnt show up in the stats. qb could also throw into double coverage and their WR catches it for a long TD. looks great on paper but was a bad play by te qb.

yep, theres stats and then there are grades. but the huddle will never forgive them because they gave rodgers an average grade after performing at an average level.

PFF has been a message board resource long before ESPN adopted it....the Rodgers grade wasn't what suddenly made their grading questionable.

in theory PFF is great.  They just don't have it worked out right completely

My biggest gripe with PFF is that they don't know what plays are being called, and therefore have no idea what any particular players assignment should be on a given play. So how can you praise or knock people for doing what they should or should not be doing when you don't know what task they've been assigned with in the first place?

This.

Kinda like with a blown coverage.  You know someone screwed up, but it's just speculation as to who it until you know the play call.  Maybe the coach will go over it in the presser and maybe he won't.

Same with an INT on an option route.  The QB and the WR obviously weren't on the same page, but who made the correct read?  We don't know.

This and the fact that they don't take into account who you are playing against.  An o-lineman could be trying to block JJ Watt or some undrafted free agent that is only starting because of a lot of injuries.  If that player beats the o-lineman for a sack they give the o-lineman the same negative grade in each case.  Not all defensive lineman are the same, not all wide receivers are the same, PFF never takes any of that into account.

    • https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47371200/sources-rams-fire-special-teams-coordinator-chase-blackburn LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Rams have fired special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The move marks the first in-season coaching change that Rams head coach Sean McVay has made in his nine seasons in Los Angeles. Rams assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica will take over and become the lead special teams coach, a source told Schefter. The Rams, 11-4 and second place in the NFC West, lost to the Seahawks on Thursday night in a game that included a Seattle punt return for a touchdown and a missed 48-yard field goal by Los Angeles kicker Harrison Mevis. The Seahawks (12-3) overtook the Rams for first place in the division and the top overall record in the NFC thanks to the 38-37 overtime victory. Though the Rams have lost only four games this season, three have involved special teams miscues. In the Rams' first loss of the season, 33-26 to the Eagles, Los Angeles had its final two offensive possessions end with blocked kicks. In the Rams' Week 10 victory over the Saints, kicker Joshua Karty missed an extra point and a 39-yard field goal attempt. After the game, McVay said the Rams' special teams issues "can't continue like this." Los Angeles replaced long-snapper Alex Ward with Jake McQuaide and Karty with Mevis, who had not missed a kick until Thursday night in Seattle. Blackburn, 42, was in his third season as the Rams' special teams coordinator. A former linebacker for the Giants and Panthers, he also has worked as an assistant with Carolina and Tennessee.
    • It was a bad play from Icky but the OL didn't give up a sack until late in the 4th quarter and Bryce just stood there like he was canatonic. If our 3rd year number one overall pick can't overcome one single sack against a rebuilding Saints team that should only have 2 wins this season then it isn't ever going to happen   This is your quote. I mean I’ve quoted it twice. It was followed by calling people that defended him fugers and several other meltdowns I can also quote.    Shame you for working for a living??? Wow this is a whole new level to your victim mentality thing you like to do. You don’t have to watch games live. Or don’t spend an entire thread arguing about something you didn’t get the full picture of. I miss parts of games all the time. That’s just life. Not even going into the whole losing all respect thing.
    • Rams ended up firing ST coach and former Panthers coach Chase Blackburn after the loss. Sounds all too familiar.
