"Entertainment icon" progress

With all the celebration dance hate going around I think it's worth noting that Cam's closer to his "entertainment icon" dream now than ever before. For the first time I'm seeing a lot of non-fans across the country talk about him each week, and almost entirely positive. Celebrities and rappers are namedropping him and now even people outside of the market are calling for MVP.

Popular rapper Future rapped "getting money like Cam Newton" and we haven't lost since.

Lebron and Steph, the two biggest names in basketball, have given Cam public support.

With a couple of GB fans as the exception the general consensus on taking the sign seems to be pro-Cam.

Continued ad campaigns.

Lots of charitable work this year from the whole team and Cam's ball giving getting more attention making for great PR.

Black Twitter is having a ball with his "keep me out of the end zone" line.

BONUS: Cam is a squeaky clean and avoids all of the vices of being a young rich athlete. No alcohol, strippers, guns, drugs, etc

An entertainment icon in sports to me is someone like Michael Jordan, Michael Vick, Allen Iverson. An explosive talent and personality that captures the imaginations of the urban market. Kaepernick came out with tattoos and a sneaker collection so ESPN tried hard to make him the hip hop bad boy of football, but the only NFL players that are truly taking off with audiences are Cam and OBJ and we're seeing Cam pull away with it. This is for two simple reasons: wins, and he's owning his personality.

Winning really is everything. None of Cam's record shattering seasons as an individual ever got the attention that 9-0 is. I also think we're seeing the first season where Cam is not compromising himself to satisfy people who want to be lowkey at all times. He speaks from the heart at press conferences and that's why get memorable lines like "keep me out of the end zone" and "You can't sell a Whopper at McDonalds" instead of the generic answers of the past.

So whether you love his dances or not, I'm pretty sure we officially have the coolest player in the league in the Carolina Panthers' QB and I can't wait to see what comes next.

To your point. I go to the same bar every weekend that the Panthers are not Televised. Because of this over the last year I have met a ton of regulars there (being a regular myself) I have basically a reserved seat and reserved TV that plays the Panthers games every time (since I've sat there we have not lost a regular season game).

I have become friends with Raiders/Chargers/9'ers/Bears/Packers/Rams etc fans.... they have all started to follow the Panthers closer than before because they can't believe the juju I have going on with that seat. As the Bar manager says "You can't beat the seat"

I bring this up because a side effect of this is they are also paying more attention to Cam. And the universal consensus is they love him. I had a Bears fan to my left, Chargers, Raiders, 9'ers fan to my right... they all lost their collective poo when Cam kept his dance going. They loved it more than I did.

PS: My only quibble, would be your comment "An explosive talent and personality that captures the imaginations of the urban market."

Not sure what you meant by "urban market". But suburban and rural kids like Jordan, Cam, and OBJ, etc.. as well, BTW

Definitely. To be a true star everyone and their grandma has to like you but in entertainment that starts with the hip hop audience crowning you these days. That's cultural and not regional though, you're right.

Like there's always better and and well known players but few will ever be as cool as Vick or Iverson were in their prime.

You're so edgy.

And I love that Cam is quickly becoming the "it" player for the NFL. I don't mind new fans at all and I've been trying to put all my friends who don't follow football to closely on at least being a Cam fan for everything else he brings to table. The future is bright and I'm loving every minute of it. I visiting family in Gerogia this weekend and I was surprised on how many kids and people complimented me on my Newton jersey in Falcon country. Its also really exciting when I wear any kind of Panther gear in Austin, TX and people not looking at me like they have no clue who the Panthers or Cam is or just straight is teasing me for being a Panther through all those terrible years with Clausen/Carr/Moore

Before I moved to California I was working in Atlanta and living in Raleigh. It was our 12-4 season a few years ago so the Falcons fans had a reason to be mad. I flew to and from every week...

Well I would wear my Newton Jersey every flight and without fail the airport workers would tell me how much they loved my jersey... hated my team, but loved my jersey.

    • They traded away their 1st next year also to get James Pearce Jr. Really hope this blows up in the Falcons face. I don't care how it happens, I just want to win the division this year. Zero sympathy for other team's issues. And our pass rush looks like it needs all the help it can get.
    • I would have released him this season, tbh and worked with Christensen out there.
    • 10/10. We're due for some good luck, and I think this team is much better than what we've had the last 2 seasons. Defensive injuries could derail us b/c our depth there is still questionable. Still worried about the pass rush getting pressure without blitzing. Pleasantly surprised by the secondary and run defense.  Dan Morgan has done a lot to resurrect this roster from the deplorable position Fitterer left it in by showing some scouting chops with hitting on these guys drafted in the later rounds or UDFAs. Lathan Ransom & Corey Thornton both look like they fit this scheme and the NFL isn't too big for them.  I'm as excited for the rookie trifecta of T-Mac, Scourton, and Princely as I can remember. On paper, this offense is the most talented since 2021, maybe 2017, and maybe 2015. None of that means this team will produce any better, but this team has offensive talent & depth like we have rarely had in team history. If you don't believe me, go Google it. We've had some awful offensive collections overall in many years, to varying degrees mitigated by superstar talents like Steve Smith, Christian Mccaffrey, or Cam Newton.  I honestly think the collective offensive talent in 2025 may be better, but Cam was so otherworldly in 2015 & 2017 that he covered any flaws. Seriously, though, Cam doesnt get enough love for 2017. I think that may have been his best season. In general, Cam doesn't get enough respect IMHO. Both in college and in the NFL, Cam took teams that without him would have had no chance and won. True definition of a guy who elevated his team. To be clear, I am in no way am I saying this team will be better than 2017 or 2015. My point is that the offensive talent is there on offense if Bryce can unlock it.  I've been a Bryce supporter, but there are no excuses not to perform with this group. This isn't the disaster we gave him in 2023 or a new scheme like in 2024 where I think he hadn't mentally removed from his rookie season to start. I dont know how you couldnt be excited about that. And we still compete in a division that isn't insurmountable. I got got in 2023 like most of us in buying into the team propaganda, but in general, I think I'm pretty realistic about the team. I knew in my heart we would be bad last year. I wasnt expecting the defense to be that bad or Bryce to start off that poorly, but I had no expectations whatsoever for making the playoffs. And I genuinely think we will be competitive all year this season. I think we win 8-9 games and compete for the division. I think the ceiling is 11 wins, and the floor is 7. The good news is after next week, we will all be proven right or proven wrong. Keep Pounding!
