Gano's leg strength

Opinions please.

I'm sure we've all noticed Gano's shorter KO's.

Is it a case of him losing leg strength, or is Dehaven behind it, trying to encourage the opponents to bring it out and hoping we get them down at the 10 or 15?

Either way it kind of bit us in the ass yesterday, and I hope we can get it worked out.

My guess is that yesterday it can be attributed to kicking into the wind. Gano and DeHaven knew he wasn't going to be able to kick it into the end zone, so he kicked if shorter and high in hopes to allow the coverage unit to get down the field. They got down the field but didn't keep their lanes and a guy with great speed made them pay. Can't say that there's any more to it than that.

This. If I remember correctly, he was kicking them out of the end zone in the second and third quarter, so I'm thinking it was being against the wind in the first and fourth.

It wasn't just yesterday though. I've noticed it in several games this year.

Perhaps it's been windy in several. It's difficult to tell sometimes watching the telecast.

i mean its rained during like five games this year and that definitely isnt helping with footing

I was wondering the same thing myself a few weeks ago. I think it really has more to do with situations and dehaven's scheme because while we haven't been getting touchbacks, they've barely been getting the ball past the 15 when they take it out. Happened too often from gano for me to think otherwise.

He's still been decent. 2nd in KO yards and T-6th in # of touchbacks. But as a percentage of all kickoffs his TB number is lower this year at around 55% vs 74% in 2014 and 78% in 2013. But our kickoff coverage numbers are just gross. And we're one of only 4 teams that have allowed KO return TDs this year. I hope he sends them into the stands from now on. Anything else and I'll be holding my breath.

    • Given that the immediate impact we need at edge. We almost certainly address that in Free agency, not in the draft. Same with Linebacker, unless Styles or Allen is still there at 19. I think the same for OT.  What is the position that we could draft in the 1st round and get immediate help in the first is how im approaching their decision-making  I know ill get dragged for this, but im thinking they go DT in the first. A guy that can play right away and be a complement to D.Brown to wreak havoc at the LOS.   So unless a top tier LB is there, I think DT will be the move.
    • I think people forget that by his last season Steve Smith had the ass and he played like it - and for no really good reason other than that other stars were emerging on the team and he didn't want to share the spot light.  He was more of a locker room distraction than he was worth. He went on to have great performances with the Ravens' but G-man made the right move allowing him to move on from here.  I personally think it was addition by subtraction and we don't have a super bowl run with Smith on the roster. Steve Smith remains a narcissist who I've never seen internalize his own culpability when it comes to his relationships with others - it's always somebody else's fault as to why he was forced to act like an asshole. This video is a product ad.  I'm cringed that either of these two Panther greats are party to it.
    • I think the ‘issue’ here is that we had two guys that clashed for several reasons. In some ways they were different, but in other ways they had a lot in common, and sadly they couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Sometimes when you have two people like that together they are either going to love or hate each other, and if it’s the latter, you need someone to mediate and hope the two individuals are capable of putting their differences aside for the common good. In this instance, they couldn’t find a way to move forwards together because I don’t think either guy wanted to play second fiddle to the other. This video basically said neither guy had the tools to bridge that gap and mend that fence, and perhaps also were unwilling to give an inch at that stage in their lives and careers. So a divorce, while unfortunate, was always likely. Do we win the Super Bowl with Smitty and Cam? Well, it’s one of life’s big what ifs for us Panthers fans.
