New Fans are everywhere!

I live in Western NY, in the heart of Buffalo Bills territory. I went into a Wegmans yesterday (grocery store for those of you who are unfamiliar) and in their "fan shop" they has some plastic NFL cups of every team...except the Panthers. Typically it because no one here carries Panthers stuff, but I actually found the row the Panthers were supposed to be in and it was empty while every other team remained...

Went through Mcaddenville last night to see the lights (family tradition), I promise, for every Merry Christmas we heard, it was either followed or preceded by GO PANTHERS!

quick story, we were stuck in traffic about 300 yards from a Hardee's and I had to pee, I jumped out and started waliking. Up ahead was a little family, mom and 2 kids.  The older one, a boy, saw me coming and in as low a voice as he could muster said, J-Steeeeeww.  I was wearing my old 28 jersey.  It made me blush.

I was there last night as well. Tons of Panther fans out.

Telltale signs of a bandwagon fan? Jake, Smitty, or Peppers jerseys.

Not true at all. I have all three and a dozen more. I would wear a Delhomme or Smitty for sure just like I wear my Mills. Now Peppers or Collins (I burned that one) I won't ever wear them.

Going through TSA at the airport Saturday, guy sees my shirt and says, "You're not one of those bandwagon fans are you?".  smdh

Also, someone I know was rocking a Falcons hat not long ago, went to a Falcons game in Atlanta earlier this year, yesterday he was referring to the Panthers as "we", as in "Who do we play next week? The Giants?".  lol ok

Yeah its crazy how people never noticed.  Got a lot l looks in phoenix airport while wearing my panther hat today.  One person said another bandwagon fan as we passed by... I yelled hey not true.... as I pointed to my arctic white '90s jacket with huge old logo that I was carrying. Love that jacket then (even if it was my big Bros jacket)  and still love it now that it fits me.

I will admit lots of people strike up conversations at the airport about them than they ever did before. it certainly shocks them to hear your a PSLS holder and not a person wearing the cool hat

i go to the same sports bar every sunday here in brooklyn. originally it was just me and another dude, with three other guys showing up periodically.

this week whenever the panthers scored like ten people started cheering. it was just me and the other dude with none of the other semi-regulars. the two of us just looked at each other like "what is this bullshit who are these bandwagoners."

pretty lame

It's odd... I just had a revelation about how truly different my Panthers' fandom is than any previous time I've been a fan of a team.

Growing up lived in NJ.  Went to a few Giants games with family or school friends over the years, enjoyed watching them on TV and rooting for their success, but never owned any Giants gear and was truly only a very casual fan.

In grad school I spent 5 years in the Baltimore & Washington D.C. area.   Became a pretty rabid Orioles fan and Redskins fan.  (Both Washington & Baltimore were at that point one sport cities.  Baltimore had no NFL team in the late 80s, and DC had no baseball team.  Went to several Orioles games at old Memorial stadium (including during their infamous 0-21 start in 1988).  Followed each team really closely (listened to practically every O's game on the radio for 4 years!), Loved players like Cal Ripken for the O's, and Art Monk, Darrell Green, Joe Jacoby for the Skins... But I NEVER owned any of those team's gear... and only got the cheapest bleacher seat tickets for the O's games I attended (lived within walking distance of Memorial stadium for two seasons before I moved down close to D.C.).  I was in grad school.  Money was tight...  I think I did get an Orioles Christmas tree ornament one year... but that was it.

This year, I've just spent over $1000 on decent tickets to the Jan 3rd game and a bunch of Panthers' swag for me and my brother, and I was SO EXCITED to do it.   I am proud to say that my brand new (waiting for me in Charlotte) Luke Kuechly jersey is the first and only NFL jersey I have ever owned, or ever will have worn.  Same is true for my brother.  He's always been an indifferent sports fan until he started following the Panthers after Cam was drafted. (He moved to CLT in 2009, I followed a few years later)  I was shocked when my brother hinted he'd like a Panthers jersey as a Christmas present....!  Got him a Greg Olsen jersey...

So, Jan 3rd the two of us will be in the stands rocking our first-ever NFL jerseys....  can't wait!  Shared Panthers fandom is something that's bringing me and my brother closer together and I really appreciate that!

Wearing a Panthers Victory Monday shirt yesterday at the mall yesterday, and had a number of people comment on the blowout game. A little grumbling from a few about the score, but heard a number of "we love Cam" comments (backed up with "you know he's an Atlanta boy" comment).

I don't mind the bandwagon fans jumping on board; if we can't start 'em as Panther fans at birth, you gotta start somewhere with the conversion.  A little taste of what it's like to cheer for a winning team is all it takes.

I'm trying to decide which is worse - 1) using the term (sports team) Nation or 2) listing your resume on the Huddle to explain how you're not a bandwagon fan.

<-- "Member of PantherNation since October 1993"

(wait, that's not what you're looking for?)
