thoughts from the game

If the coordinators are doing EXACTLY the opposite of what the head coach has told then to do, that's a problem.

So do you really think that's what happened?  You seriously thing Shula and McDermott thought in their minds "fug that guy, I'll do what I want!"

You missed the whole point.  The coordinators call the plays, the head coach is concerned with a number of things on the field as the game unfolded managing the whole team not individual units. They did what they thought they should do. Rivera determines the overall philosophy but the coordinators actually call individual plays and determine the rotations.  They arent doing the opposite of what Rivera wants, they are calling plays and formations that they think support that philosophy.  Rivera was saying he felt some of the playcalling was too conservative.  Not hard at all to figure it out.

What I think he was referring to was the play calling on both sides by the coordinators.  Shula shut down the trick plays and passing on 1st or 2nd down.  McDermott wasnt blitzing as often and playing more soft cover 2 and cover 3.  Rivera tells them to limit turnovers and run the clock on offense and not keep everything in front of you on defense.  But he doesn't calls the plays on either side of the ball.

If Rivera tells Shula to "limit turnovers" and "run clock" and tells McDermott to "keep everything in front of you" WHAT THE FUG ELSE SHOULD HE EXPECT BUT THE MOST CONSERVATIVE PLAY CALLING EVER?

I dont understand your  negative attitude or complaining.  There is no award for beating a team by a certain amount.  The goal is to win by all means necessary.  What we do next week has no bearing on what we did last week or will the do the following week.  Football is about matchups and weekly contests.  We won and are moving on.  We even covered the spread.  Are you mad that the Seattle comeback made you feel uncomfortable and now you are pissed off or what.  Hell I was at the game and watched it live and am good with it.  Why arent you???

I was in no way referring to margin of victory.

I am referring to you and others and Rivera throwing the coordinators under the bus, as if the damn coordinators are just free-lancers with total free will under no orders but their own.  That's a ridiculous way to think.

No one said that so I dont know why you are trying to blame someone here. Frankly I dont have time to explain to you or others who are pissed off for whatever reason.  I am looking forward to next week when we host the first ever NFC championship game at BOA.  I will be there planning to shake the stadium like we did today.  Best first half I have ever witnessed personally.  What a great win today.  I am sorry that folks are unhappy or wanting to blame anyone for one of the best wins in our short history in the playoffs.  I just dont get it.

The question isn't about Rivera calling the plays or the margin of victory. Nobody even put that in question here. The question is why didn't Rivera talk to the coordinators when he thought they were being too conservative instead of acting like he had no idea what was going on out there and didn't know how to change it.

Yeah, I have a hard time buying the "I am just a neutral by-stander on the sideline with no ability to affect strategy or play-calling" speech Rivera gave post-game.

I have a world of respect for Rivera and that kind of throw'em-under-the-bus tactic was very sad and unexpected.
