A Completely Objective, Unbiased View of the Arizona Fan Base

Let’s be honest.  Were it not for 2 things, Arizona would not even have a football team.  1) irrigation.  Without it, Arizona is pretty much a place for cacti and rock lizards.  2) Retirees.  With the irrigation came 70-year old transplants from the Great Lakes area with retirement pensions and social security seeking a pleasant death in the dry heat of Arizona.  It is a land where plaid shorts and black knee socks do not stand out; a land where air conditioning and defibrillators consume 90% of the energy supply.  Wedged between the nearly polar-opposite cultures of Mexico and the Mormons of Utah, the identity crisis is only compounded by the transplanted geriatrics looking for relief of chronic joint pain more than touchdowns.  Zinc Oxide on noses and “The clapper” in every room, Arizona fans need a new story; they have been telling the same ones, without remembering anyone’s name, for 40 years. I can hear them now, “Remember when that Johnny Carson guy threw that ball to F. Scott Fitzgerald and they won the game?   Boy, the other team that had that coach who got cancer and died a few years ago—the Crackers or something—you know, the ones in the green shirts that-he wore a hat and had glasses—looked just like the captain on that tv show about boats--what was I saying?”    They are pumped for this one, if you call a pace maker getting pumped, but they are a bit upset, because a 6:20 start here means a 3:20 start Arizona time, one hour before the Golden Corral Senior Sunday Extravaganza opens and three hours before bedtime.   There is so much to do before then too, like feeding the 32 cats and getting new turn signal lights at Auto Zone for the Chrystler Cordoba, but they will make time for this big game, because it is closed captioned.  “Go, um, uh, what is the na—Cardinals.”

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
