Stupid rule then since fumbles after the whistle don't count so why should lateral passes be any different after the whistle is blown, when, technically, it's also a fumble?

The Panthers have benefited from that stupid rule a million times.  The only thing the whistle does it keep the continuing action from counting.  That is why most officials don't blow their whistle on these plays anymore.

Hochuli once cost the Chargers a game in Denver with an "inadvertent" whistle. this rule was put in to prevent incompetent refs like hochuli deciding games. Good call.
