Cam vs Manning is Joe Lewis vs Max Schmeling

Snippets from this fine article which you should totally read if you have the time.

Not off-the-field either. If Cam refused to report to camp after a 4-12 season and forced a trade like Carson did with the Bengals, he would be branded a "me-first" diva and possibly gone from the league. And if one of Cam's celebration's included Carson's crotch-taunting moves, then more than one mother would be sending a "letter-to-the-editor" about her now corrupted kid.

Palmer's second chances are par for the course for No. 1 QB picks who are white. Before giving up, Tim Couch received 59 starts before the Browns gave up, and David Carr got a whopping 79. Even heralded No. 2 picks get long looks. Five teams took a chance on Rick Mirer, and all-time bust/head case Ryan Leaf had four teams sign him before he voluntarily quit the game.

Smith, also a former No. 1 pick, has developed into a fine quarterback — far more than a "game manager." But he was downright terrible his first five seasons (see 51 TD passes in 50 starts). Despite nearly identical statistics and a higher passer rating with Smith over his first three years, former No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell was booted out of the NFL.

After five years Smith's team record was 19-31, almost the opposite of Vince Young's 30-17 starting record. Young, who has seen his life spiral to the depths and was recently arrested in Austin, Texas for a DWI, played in two Pro Bowls, but played only one more season after. Instead of being nurtured like Smith, Young was benched for the slightest mistake by coach Jeff Fisher for Kerry Collins — who went 26-50 over his last nine seasons. Fisher, who preferred to draft Matt Leinart, remains employed with the Rams despite five straight losing seasons — unchartered waters for African-American coaches (an article for another day).

In an attempt to avoid comparing Peyton Manning (whom I have a great deal of respect for) to a Nazi, let me say that I'm not comparing Peyton Manning to a Nazi (nor was Max Schmeling actually a Nazi) I will say this however. The one thing that keeps people like me from truly enjoying the NFL are the blatant double standards that are set for players and coaches depending on the color of their skin. There is absolutely no need to revisit them all, we've been down that road on this forum before. However, if you have the slightest urge to see the NFL become a true meritocracy, you better hope Cam Newton finishes with a damn near perfect passer rating in 10 days. An NFL where "athletic" QBs aren't turned into wide receivers and an NFL where Jimmy Clausen and Blaine Gabberts never see the field. Its quite simple. Cam Newton dominates, and the best men will begin to play. He struggles, and the old racial trigger words will fly out so fast nobody will know what hit them.

I overheard a few older white men discussing Cam Newton not long ago today. As predicted, it centered around the usual rhetoric about celebrating, or "hot dogging" as one put it, and both seemed to concur that they "weren't a fan".

What a couple of babies, some people are just miserable prudes. With all that is going on in the world today, you're really that bent out of shape over an athlete celebrating? It makes zero sense to me. Go watch some Cricket if it hurts your feelings that bad. Even in Golf you see guys getting fired up, and emotional. Give me a break.

skin color or not.......the old hate the young.......because they aren't young......and Cam shows how fun it is to be young.

In every generation you have some of those that are older that are repulsed by how the young act......forgetting that they were young too.

In regards to color jazz great Dizzy Gillespie used to say that you had to be better and act better for a longer time to be accepted because the White man expected the Black man to fail......seems to fit the bill on QB expectations as outlined in the article........

Beyond all that............the real question is how in the world did Jimmy Clausen ever get into the NFL to begin with!!!

I mentioned this in another thread few days ago. America used to hate Ali, and it wasn't just white ppl (who never saw someone with his skin color dance, taunt and be unapologetic), black ppl hated him too because he humiliated other black boxers and those he described as ugly compared to him and his light skin color. and was a member of a cult . But he won. A lot. And he never backed down. Just like Cam.

Plus they're jelly because they can't dance.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
