thomas Davis, Charles Johnson and Roman Harper (wtf) are telling him to take less money on a one year deal to take another run at the super bowl.

I really really really really really doubt this.  NO sane professional football player would recommend that a free agent in his prime "sign a one-year prove it deal".  Because they know best of all the danger of the game.

That's idiotic.  And any professional football player who recommended such a thing, especially those who already have there's in the bank, is an idiot.

Not saying your lying.  But I am saying I think (at least with regard to the point I'm making) you're being sold a bill of goods.

People who think Gettleman is playing hardball or sending a message need to remember that he stressed again today that he does what is best for the long term sustained success of the Carolina Panthers. He doesn't believe in windows being open or closed and doesn't believe  that you are one player away from the Superbowl.

This is about placing a value on a player on your team and paying accordingly fitting it under your cap. He sticks to his beliefs about football. He likes Josh and wants him here as long as he can fit his price tag into the bigger picture. The reason the 13 million tag makes little sense is that you only buy 1 year and you have to pay it all up front. A four year deal could have a cap hit of 8 million the first year. That would be almost a five million discount which could really help make the Short deal happen this year.  Short on a five year deal could have up to  a 9 million first year cap hit and still when combined with Norman's could be only 3 million more than the tag on Norman alone.  That is why it is long term deal or nothing.

The main thing to keep in mind is josh didn't want to play anywhere but Carolina. However, he also wanted to be paid.

His agent preached hardball, telling him "this is how the game is played." He was presented tons of similar instances (drew brees being the prime example) of how these holdouts always end well for the player.

At no point was josh trying to get out of Carolina. Gettleman just wasn't interested in play Josh's agent's game.

Additionally the panthers do not think as highly of josh as josh thinks of himself, and that because of the schedule they don't really feel he's integral, which I don't understand.

At this point, josh would have to take even less than he was offered originally to come to Carolina, or a short two year deal.

Josh is now torn between his last paycheck or staying at a place that has basically treated him like a son since he was drafted.

thomas Davis, Charles Johnson and Roman Harper (wtf) are telling him to take less money on a one year deal to take another run at the super bowl.

gettleman basically just sent a message to every single agent and player in the league, and every employee is updating their resume lol

holy crap man

I didn't know that about Davis, Johnson, Harper.

Two things. First, wasn't Norman on a non-exclusive tag? Where teams can negotiate & the Panthers would have a chance to match the offer or get 2 1st-round draft picks? Maybe no other team showed interest. Or they did but couldn't discuss any deal because Norman didn't sign the franchise tag offer. Not the most reliable but still could give Gettleman an idea of market value.

Also, I'm not saying that Gettleman is gun-shy over the franchise tag (man with a plan!) but he might be affected by Hardy's tag-gone-wrong, getting-nothing-for-something situation. Which could help lead to a quick pulling it off the table without hesitation versus the idea of getting nothing at all.

At the end of the day, this is about establishing a winning organization that doesn't bend to huge contracts outside a select few.  We will pay modestly and favorably given the situation but it's a system and the scenario is simply not presenting a fit.  What we're doing attracts certain types of players.  Not to say Josh isn't one but he's in a dealio where he's gotta do what he's gotta do.  This is like a Ballers episode lol (which ironically, that DB the Rock reps in it is eerily similar to Josh)

I'm oddly excited but bummed at the same time.  What's done is done.

The panthers could have negotiated a trade with another team for Norman, contingent on there being a contract in place for him to sign. The jets are doing something similar with Wilkerson right now. of course we have no idea if a team offered us anything worthwhile. Remember they'd have to be willing to trade a pick, then sign him in addition. That's a lot of cheese.

    • Some of you act like one can't learn from experience over time. Just because you may not know what you're doing in 2018 doesn't mean that you don't know what you're doing in 2025. Frankly, you grow from experience, and success and excellence gives first-time applicants the hand probably 99.999% of the time.
    • It's an interesting topic of conversation as sports evolves. I think ultimately it would lead to a number of small market franchises folding though. Especially in the NBA where there are so many bad teams that have been bad for years and years in some cases already. But as it stands I think athlete pay draft or no draft aside has reached a point where we can and should realistically ask should they make that much compared to the average person. Now college athletes is a different conversation but even that reaches a breaking point. But we could go down the rabbit hole on this even further into overall entertainment and talk about actors making absurd sums too. In the end I think in sports the powers that be won't allow these changes to even be considered because it opens the door for so many other variables. But who knows how long sports like football will realistically be around after people like us pass on. We're only just now learning about things like CTE which the league and the sport in general will only be able to run away from for so long. As far as the NBA goes my understanding is viewership has been steadily going down for a number of reasons but one crucial aspect is key players missing so many games. The NBA has to figure that out regardless. Especially when considering fans who pay to see these athletes compete in person. But hey I guess let's just try to appreciate what we've got while it still exists in this form eh?
    • I can't see a world where the money goes down, but maybe your lottery odds are now your contract numbers you can offer.  Thunder? You can offer Flagg 4 years, 20 million.  Hornets? You can offer Flagg 4 years, 80 million.  Some form of a system where the money is still there, but so is the freedom of choice (on top of bad teams getting *some* competitive advantage to signing them).
