Apparently ESPN has to cut 250-260m out of the budget by 2017 and they're not even 30% done.

Damn, even I didn't think it was that bad. So they have about another $175M to go. Really their only chance to shed that much off their budget is to sell some of their live sports rights off to another channel for cents on the dollar.

The thing is..until another network actually competes with them just hiring away talent won't do much in the long run becasue ESPN is in a position to create the next loud mouth everyone hates on the internet but still watches.

Fox sports was suppose to be that but they failed so now theyre just picking ESPN host and hiring their former CEOs to run things

It's definitely a long road to a competitor making a real dent in ESPN, but even though I still default to ESPN I find myself watching more and more things from rival sports networks. Mostly NFLN and NBCSN though. FS1 taking all the things I hate about ESPN and putting it on their network makes it more likely for me to watch ESPN.

How are they that far over budget? Oh yeah...sexual harassment lawsuits...

Not really, mostly because they signed huge live sports extensions without thinking about the ramifications cord cutters and internet streaming services are having on traditional tv. Seriously, the college football contracts they were giving out are truly obscene.

True. Not to mention with the internet you really don't need to watch a show to see highlights. Anyone can easily you tube highlights from the past week nfl, nba, nhl, etc games.  If you know who to follow on twitter/facebook, you can easily get stories that normally would be breaking/leading on espn way before espn even mention it.

With internet no one needs a 24/7 sports news channel. The only reason for most of us to watch epsn is for a panthers monday/sunday night game.

I'm guessing there are only a select handful of people who they won't get rid of regardless of how much they get paid

namely Mike and Mike, SVP, and Chris Berman

almost everyone else is expendable to them I'm guessing

Pretty much..   Michelle Beadle (goat) learned this lesson.   I doubt they sacrifice any name in place of theirs..

Equivalent of UFC...  Doesn't mean they both won't meet their match..   So far though, still get to battle it out...
