I was actually surprised to find out we scooped up Shaq Richardson.  Remember him from his college play and liking him prior to that draft.

Four NFL teams haven't liked him. He was cut twice and dumped on 2 other practice squads. Don't see him sticking. OTOH McClain was out of football when we picked him up, and if Williams and/or Young have any real talent they haven't shown it yet.

Yeah I'm not banking on him doing much.  Same deal to when I found out Cobi Hamilton was on our squad.

Williams is a special teams ace. He'll make it as the 5th CB. McClain is gone.

Williams is a far cry from a special teams ace.  More like special teams disaster.  He was responsible for 82 yards in penalties last season, and he only sees the field on ST.

He's also responsible for a number of good tackles on ST. He only sees the field on ST because he is ST ace. I'm not saying there isn't an upgrade to be had, but let's not pretend he didn't contribute on ST which, honestly, is all your hoping your 5th CB has to do.

    • I’m not mad at Moehrig.  He’s great at what he does.  And to be honest, a lot of my favorite safeties in our history were box-first type guys - Maxie, Minter, Mike Mitchell, Chris Harris…  they’re first and foremost objective was to put people on their backs and coverage was secondary.  There is a place for that.  There is a definite need for that.  Physical guys that set the tone.  So cool, we have that in Moerhig. But what we have lacked for the vast majority of our existence is a true free safety that cleans everything up on the back end.  Sometimes they come in the form of a JOAT, like Peppers.  I think he would be a fantastic compliment to Moehrig’s strengths and weaknesses.  If we don’t go after him, I certainly hope Ransom is given the chance to grow and develop in real-time with real game reps, because what he did in preseason was very encouraging to see.  I hope he can grow into that roaming center fielder with a little bit of an edge to him as an enforcer as well.  He has the tools.  In the meantime, adding Peppers would only help.
    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
