Chris Berman may or may not retire from ESPN after 2016 NFL Season

Recommended Posts

Back, back, back, back, gone?

One of the longest tenured employees at ESPN is calling it a career after this upcoming NFL season concludes next year, around the time his contract expires.

Chris Berman, one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting and all his phrased and mannerisms will be no longer after 36 years at the network. The 61-year-old was hired just a month after the network’s initial launch in 1979.

Gaining his fame as a SportsCenter anchor like most at the company do, Berman eventually reached out into other realms, covering golf, baseball and ESPN’s football coverage, where he became the face and voice of “Monday Night Countdown” and “Sunday NFL Countdown” shows.

ESPN has seen numerous changes in recent months, with huge personalities be the like of Colin Cowherd, Skip Bayless, Mike Turico and now Berman leaving the network by means of one way or another.

According to The Big Lead, Berman is unlikely to pursue a position at another network and ESPN is reportedly planning a grand send-off for Berman “akin to the way the Lakers sent Kobe Bryant into retirement.”

According to Sporting News, It’s not clear who would fill his chair, but it’s been speculated that “NFL Live” host Trey Wingo would be a likely replacement.

I'll acknowledge that Berman is a long time broadcast fixture, but not sure how I'll feel about his absence.

Now if you want to salute an all time broadcasting great, how can you beat Vin Skully's 67 years in the Dodgers booth?

I thought he was older than 61. ESPN is purging contracts. They are in a desperate cap situation since less and less people are watching. I admit I still watch but I also don't watch outside of 2 hours of Mike and Mike before Dan Patrick comes on. Lebatard is the only talent they have left and they just took his show off the air. ESPN is doomed in a way.

Is Loomis running their organization?

    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
    • At least we have Mike Kay and his little buddy sidekick whoever to put you to sleep when suffering from insomnia. They're all useless unfortunately.
