Re-Grading the 2013 draft

A+.  Won't knock him too hard for Kugbila given that he was going to take Klein there anyway if not.  We missed nothing by taking Kugbila (i.e. Kealoha Pilares over Richard Sherman).  We nearly got a comp pick from Philly for Barner and he eventually showed decent promise there for a 6th rounder.  Star and KK alone are an A+.  Star falling is my favorite draft pick on draft day in my fandom.

GMan deserves nothing less than an A+ for everything, just can't wait to see what he does with our CURRENT/2016 nearly $30 million of available funds when there are "a lot" of options as a/THE Super Bowl front runner.

All this Gettleman talk made me look back and actually see how he did with his first draft at GM.

How I see it..

How would you grade it out?

With Paul Solia and Butler Star can get more 1-1 matchup , could have 3-6 sacks this season

5 AB's

2 HR's (Star,Short)

1 BBB (Klein)

2 K's (Kugz, Barner)

With only 5 picks Getts reinvented Carolina's interior DLine, and got invaluable depth for his backers while simultaneously  improving ST's.

So he took a couple good swings at Ed and Kenjon, it happens.  I'm sold on this draft even more now than I was then.

Klein gets the triple because he helps in 3 important ways, OLB (starting caliber) MLB (backup/starting caliber) STs (ace).

I think it's a fair assessment. I can't even give Barner a C- myself, but it hurt worse to strike out on the 4th rounder. OTOH Klein ended up being such a steal with the 148th pick that I could see giving that one an A+. The 1st, 2nd, and 5th rounds make this class a winner and a better one than anyone had a right to expect.

A- is fair by pure outcome metrics. weight it based on the nfl standard (where nobody every nails all draft picks) and it's easily a high A. star and kk were two of the best picks in the entire draft.

When Eric Fisher is #1 overall it's a WEAK draft to boot.

I am a hard taskmaster. No curve. No pluses or minuses. Straight B.

KK gets an A for obvious reasons

Star gets a  B. His injuries, which have to be taken into account, have held him back and hasn't given the clearest picture of his abilities.

Klein gets a B. He hasn't proven to be top tier yet, but he's good.

Barner gets a C. Maybe too high a grade considering his stint here, but 7th round pick compensation raises the grade to average.

Kugbila is an absolute and total failure.

While I am a proponent of meritocracy, I fail to understand how Klein is a B because "he hasn't proved to be top tier yet".

What more can a fifth rounder do other than learn and effectively backup/start all three LB positions and do so with little drop off while replacing one of, if not the, best LB in the game?

I don't believe the measure of success for a fifth round pick is all-pro is it?  I mean it happens(Norman) but it's hardly commonplace.

The selection of Klein in the 5th deserves an A because he has proven not to be a wtf pick like we all thought and further illustrates the meticulous talent selection processes our front office has in place.

Without Klein there is little chance we make it through those Luke-less games last season undefeated.

    • They said there wasn't clear evidence to warrant the overturn.  How would it have made a difference at that point in the game?   https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/nfl-privately-admitted-to-erroneous-reversal-of-catch-by-panthers
    • Me, I'm sick of WWE channel hopping their PLEs and shows. Netflix now with Raw. USA still has Smackdown but you can't get it with Roku if you don't also have cable. Then they went from all the PLEs on Peacock to ESPN+ which required upgrading your Disney+ package. Then they frikkin' move Saturday Night Main Event with John Cena's retirement match back over to frikkin' Peacock, which we'd just cancelled two months prior because no PLEs there anymore. And there are fewer, but longer matches and its the same danged stories again and again. Rematch after rematch after rematch between PLEs. Fewer matches, fewer wrestlers, more promos (of lesser quality) and less action.  It just seems like it's all fillers and re-runs. I'm tired of Cody Rhodes. I'm tired of Jey Uso. I'm tired of the two Brons. Shuffle the deck a bit guys, this game's getting stale.
    • Chuba was 3 yards behind the 3 gap. He was lined up weak offset I. It was a 33 dive. Chuba needed to power through off of Ekwonu's block and slip off into the 5 gap where the Tremble had the lane sealed and Rick pulled the LB out of the 5 gap. Here's a visual if you need proof. Chuba did a jump cut laterally to the 2 gap on the right side with unblocked defenders crashing down and went airborne.   This is a 33 dive that should have been slipped off the block into the 5 gap. Chuba lacked vision, but you can see Rico and Bryce staring at the intended running lane sealed off by Tremble and Ekwonu. He should have read Ekwonu's block. The blocking and misdirection is NOT set up for the right side. The play worked. Chuba failed to execute on this play. Trust who you want to, but I wouldn't suggest you argue with the video. Anyone telling you this was drawn up to go right with the blocking did not analyze it. They are correct it should have been a called dive, and it was a called dive.  This was a weak offset I bringing Tremble in motion from the right to the left.
