"Oher Steals from Panthers"

there was a distant twinkle of intelligence in one of the comments though

One of the things that people didn't understand about the tackle position in Carolina is that it's very different from that in Baltimore. You don't have to worry about Joe breaking contain and running more than once a game so the strategy is never to "keep him in the pocket."

However obviously with Cam you do, so playing contain is paramount and forces DEs and LBs not to rush the QB directly and instead make sure he doesn't get the edge especially while you're in Man coverage.

this is something of a good point.  i'll concede that cam's mobility probably helps our tackles out.

i think he goes too far into "cam is michael vick" territory with it though as our quarterback does tend to hang in the pocket as a bunch of panthers fans have pointed out.  he isn't like kaepernick in the sense that he's a one/two read tops and if they're covered he's taking off QB.  this is just anecdotal/based on the inherently subjective eye test but i feel like when teams get overly concerned about setting the edge and playing contain then that's when they get burned against the panthers.  it's not like teams that have demonstrated the ability to pin their ears back and actually get to cam when he's still in the pocket haven't been successful.

they have james hurst who's nearly as bad

yeah, but he's still on a rookie contract for $603,000 this season. The gist of article was not how crappy Oher was (even though they did imply that), it was that we overpaid. I disagree.

ehh for every contain-the-edge DL coach there's a crash-the-pocket DL coach who believes disruption at the line trumps damage control. they probably cancel each other out as a factor.

When you have a road grading interior line which includes 2 pro bowlers, It's ok if one of your tackles is poor in run blocking. Pass blocking, especially for LT, is extremely more important. In other words, this article was obviously made by someone with very little football knowledge. Nevermind the fact his pay is around middle of the pack as far as LTs go.

Good point. I would think having Cam back there might blur the lines between pass-blocking and run-blocking a bit. I am sure this is accounted for in those grades but in an actual game when Cam keeps it, he probably doesn't care too much how Oher is blocking; in fact, he may even prefer to let the ends get deep up field so they can't tackle him when he takes off.

the main thing was the "hurr thanks to the panthers we know it could be worse" bit.  it stuck out to me because their current LT is one of the absolute worst in the league and if anything the remark applies more to us looking at the ravens than vice versa.

hurst was actually the guy who got blasted into flacco's knee too.  the whole thing just struck me as absurd.

you'll get no argument from me as to the absurdness of the article. I can't wait to see Hurst's contract next year (although i doubt I remember this thread). All I know is that we had one of the best offenses in the league and Oher  protected the MVP's blind side (i swear no pun intended). that's enough for me.

    • I think you mean relevant but they have been fine, the problem is the lack of in game adjustments.  He has also been just decent at recruiting.  Duke having tons of success hurts and just fine isn’t good enough at UNC.
    • I don't see it as drafting a premium player to sit and wait if Walker gets hurt. We need a legitimate swing T. Unless you have a Sewell or Slater type tackle that is pretty much a sure thing, these guys can need some time to develop year 1 just like a QB ideally should. They all haven't played the elite 5 star talent on the edge. If we think another franchise tackle has dropped to us at 19, you have to pull the trigger. The position is just too damn hard to find. If it's just a "we need a tackle and this guy has a T on the board", yeah, move on, take one in the later rounds. But if that guy is there, let him back up and learn a year, then slide him into LT on year 2 of his rookie deal.  I don't see us being able to offer Walker a multi year contract after a prove it year, pay Moton his final almost fully guaranteed year, Hunt, Lewis a center and do a 50-60m extension for Bryce. The 3 most important positions on the field are QB, blindside tackle (usually LT), and edge rusher. Those are the premium positions that cost the most and are hardest to come by. If a starting caliber talent is there at 19 you have to pull the trigger.  I understand the need for a DT and S. I've been on the C and FS train for years. If we weren't staring at a potential Bryce extension, it'd make the decision a lot easier I think. It's just with all these huge contracts I don't see how we can hedge our bets on being able or even wanting to re-sign Walker, especially if he has a bad year. Icky and BC's injuries really hurt our long term plans.  If no blue chip talent at those 3 key positions are available at 19, by all means pass and draft another position. But I think it's pretty safe to say we don't have a guaranteed lock at any of them right now beyond Phillips, and they have to be somewhat of a priority.
    • Not completely accurate. I'm sure Roy is lobbying for him and Larry Brown has spoke put in support too. But Hansbrough has made comments pretty critical and hinting at a need for change. Joel Berry has gone a step further and said the standard has not been met. Scott Williams who was a teammate of Hubert's at Carolina has gone all the way and said it's time for a change at head coach.
