Do you think there is a chance Cromartie could become a Panther?

Forgive me if this has been discussed elsewhere, but I guess I just realized he was a free agent. I didn't get to see much of the game last night and no one knows how the rookie CBs will truly work out.

Panthers historically have gone after vet CBs during the season.

He is only 30. He should have enough left in his tank.

Made the Probowl in 2015, and historically has played well.

He could also provide good veteran leadership to the younger guys.

Panthers would be a good fit for him, seeing how we are in the ring hunt.

The questions I have:

Why is he still a free agent?

Injuries?

Good lockerroom guy?

I really don't think so if the rookies continue to perform like they did last night, unless it's as depth, and I don't see Crow accepting that. Now if there is some retrogression in camp or the next few games, then that would likely open the door in my opinion, but I have no reason to think that the rookies won't keep improving.

The rookie corners looked about as good as I could've imagined last night, and in camp as well, by most, if not all accounts.

Before the positive reviews started coming in on them, i kept thinking about Cromartie as well, mostly because I thought it just made too much sense.  He wanted to be here, he's familiar with Riverboat and therefore, some of the scheme, and he's a valuable veteran presence for our rookies who could still be an impact player.

That being said, of the interest was mutual, he would already be here.  I think Getts is committed to the rookies in a trial by fire way.  Maybe a rough early start could change that, but I doubt it.  And last night seemed to indicate they're progressing well.

Also, I could be wrong, but I thought i recalled seeing a recent report that said Cro is dealing with a hip condition, but don't hold me to that.  It may be why no other team has signed him yet either.

Exactly this.

If the rookies keep playing like they did last night, the answer is no.

I wouldn't think so because I know at least bradberry looked good. td even mentioned the rookies looking good during his sideline interview

Bradberry did get lucky on the first play....where the QB threw the ball into his shoulder in the endzone.   That was textbook poor young DB play.  Ball isn't thrown into him it was a TD

I think Carolina still brings in a vet DB.  Not sure where yet but we are super young at CB and IMO only have Coleman at S.

They would have to for depth at this point, I don't see that player starting though unless the DB's don't learn to flippin' get their head around and not let the WR get behind them. That was a face guarding penalty for sure.

    • yeah, now it's going to get awkward.  The team circles pay attention to all this stuff.  All the wives and girlfriends see the posts.  They all talk like everyone.  Football is just a normal world outside of the fact they play a game for lots of money.  Gossip travels. They know the Theilen's want out at this point.  Carolina is now the disappointed failed trade location.    So now AT takes sort of an inhouse hit in Carolina IMO
    • Ummm... The dude looked like he was about 180 pounds soaking wet with us (I don't care what his listed weight was/is) - he would have been destroyed in the run game even more than our current and past crappy ILBs. The problem is we primarily play 3-4 or nickel/dime - there is little room on the field for him because he isnt an edge LB blitzer and he can't cover for crap. The only thing he can do kind of well is be an in-the-box safety that can try and beat blockers to the spot because of his athleticism. Washington was able to make him work last year because they used him solely as an in-the-box safety and almost exclusively ran a single high FS. The funny thing is they had good yards/game stats against the pass despite most of their secondary having embarrassingly low PFF grades. Washington was also terrible against the run, which might explain why they gave up so few yards passing.
    • Just get the deal done. We've teased it so much that the Thielen's expect it. Now we run the risk of our veteran WR locker room presence becoming disgruntled. Just take what we can get, make him happy, and get future assets while freeing up snaps for guys who will be here beyond this season.
