Funchess just isn't that good right now.  We went to him late on 3rd down and he failed to shield the defender, let the defender get under him and break up the pass. Had that been KB, that would've been a 1st down. Instead, we had to settle for a FG. I know he had a ton of hype from the offseason and preseason, but tonight he looked like a JAG. I hope he can continue to develop, but right now our passing attack is still KB, Olsen, and please God someone else make a play every now and then to help out.

A premier corner whose criminal investigation the league didn't want to usurp after taking our franchise DE away for 21 games.

It is what it is. Rookie KB vs. the best DBs in football at the time:

I still think Funchess can become a quality WR for us, but the rumors of him taking over KB's #1 role were greatly exaggerated. When you're a big WR, you have to understand how to use your strength and size to fend off DBs. Right now Funchess doesn't. He's a big guy who plays soft.

God forbid we ask the rooks to press and potentially (likely) get beat from the veteran receivers off the LOS  they'll face this year.

The rookies playing deep zones essentially kept this game from a potential blow-out. But yeah, they were pretty bad regardless.

Definitely see your point about press but honestly it's been going on for years I cringe every time I see my corners line up 7-10 off it's essentially a first down every time barring a personal mistake but thats cover 3 for you..... I know for sure Dave should be dumpster diving for a corner Monday morning or tonight if it were me

Dude, you forgot the subbing Fozzy in for a beasting Stewart on 3rd and 1 to start the 2nd half and doing a dumbass Cam bootleg sweep. Talk about getting cute, I almost threw my tv out the damn window

Yeah, I thought maybe Stew was hurt or something.

That third down play wreaked of chicken poo.

that 3rd and 1 bootleg is where everything turned..terrible fugging call..shula trying to get cute..Cam is 6'5 250, if you want to run him put him in shotgun and run him straight at the defense..he can't be stopped

this 100%.  i knew we were in for it after that drive.  seen it too many times.  have a chance to put a team away and shula gets gimmicky when he doesn't need to.

for one you don't run that play agains that defense.  even if cam gets the first it is still a stupid call.  we come out on the first drive of the 2nd and are ripping off 4, 5, and 6 yard runs.  they get in 3rd and 1 (stewart is gassed and comes out) and shula calls a bootleg that looks like it is run the whole way.  maybe whitaker (i think it was him) got blown up and was supposed to leak out.  who knows?  i think if you are going to run that, at the least let olsen run a flat route and draw a defender away from cam.

shula has a tendency to see what's working and then go do something totally different like he is going to outsmart somebody.  the only person being outsmarted is himself.  even if it works it doesn't mean it is a sound play-call and that one happened to turn the tide of the game.  if we keep marching there and get 3 or 7, then the game is totally different.

    • I’m honestly not trying to argue with you or talk bad about Scourton, I like him and I’ve watched all of his Purdue stuff/videos you linked previously. Just like I’ve watched all of Princely’s Florida stuff I’m only pointing out the weight thing because I’m excited about the idea of him being 255-260 and being more of a stand up edge here in Carolina like he was at Purdue versus at A&M And like you, I have a crap load of experience doing the whole cutting/weight/fitness thing and I know how crappy/sluggish I feel when I’m holding as little as an extra 8-10lbs of unnecessary weight. So for Scourton to come out and say he’s 255-260 now and feels good that’s exciting based on what he’s put on film at 280 and not feeling his best
    • I hate seeing this. I'm not sure he was ever going to make it in the NFL without the injury but that injury knocked FSU out of the college football playoffs and cost him and them and opportunity on the biggest stage in college sports. The injuries are the worst part of this game. They've created a nearly unending list of "what ifs". Hell, every HS, college, and pro team out there has a long list of them. It's also a good reminder that there's no such thing as a routine major injury. Even though sports medicine has improved dramatically in recent decades, major injuries are still somewhat of a coin flip on how a guy is going to emerge from it.
    • I don't know what Texas A&M was doing with their edge rushers. They had two freaks in Scourton and Shemar Stewart and yet instead of turning them loose they asked them to play 20 lbs overweight and just set the edge. That's full-on coaching malpractice at any level. Much was made about Shemar Stewart's lack of sack production, but while he wasn't my favorite prospect this year a lot of that was clearly what they were asking him to do. The good news with Scourton is that, unlike Stewart, did manage to be a huge factor as a pass rusher despite this and despite playing 20 lbs overweight. If he can stay around 260-265 it should help him re-gain some of that explosiveness from his Purdue days.
