Didn't want to come here today... but did... Didn't see it on the front page... but Shula...

Shula can come up with some masterful play calls, especially when things are going to his script.

When the going gets tough, Shula gets his ass kicked...repeatedly.

He has the talent, he just has to figure out how to adjust to the flow of the game to take advantage of players' strengths and put them into a position to succeed.

Without Cam, Shula wouldn't even be a OC in this league in 2016

He abandon things at the wrong time. If the run is working, he thinks he's outsmarting the defense by passing. If something is working, you continue to do it until its stopped

Cam from now on needs to get plays based off film of the defense during preparation and adjustments made on the sideline (if we actually adjust) and call most of the plays himself. Hiking the ball with 5 sec left is killing our game management and flow. It's very detrimental to the team. Let the man play at the pace he's comfortable with

Never fails, players fail to execute, and the coach gets the blame.

I wish I had a job where somebody else got the blame when I fail to do what my job entails.

The players executed well in the 1st half.

Then guess what happened?  The Denver defense ADJUSTED.  They started blitzing like crazy.

What was Shula's response to that?  Draw plays?  Screens?  Slants?

Nope.

Everything downfield brother.  Sit in the pocket Cam (or run for your life) because EVERYTHING must be thrown downfield.

What pisses me off is we run on 1st down (like every other team) and can gain 4-6 yds.  The we go right into a pass which really opens you up for losing yards against this D.  If you can run for 4-6 yds, why wouldn't you run more - then after a couple runs, you play action pass.  The best way to defeat edge rushers is to run inside of their upfield rush.  It was the same way in the SB.  We wasted the entire 3rd quarter where just 1 or 2 sustained drives would have been the difference - even if we got 0 points out of them.  2nd half was like watching SB all over again.  Shula learns nothing.

Then in the 4th when we really need something - they go back to the Cam jail break runs and we march pretty much down the field.  I trust Cam to protect himself more in the run than in the pass.

Right now, this...

I would much rather him take off and run than sit in the pocket while it collapses and then try to escape from whatever junk is around him.

So much is made about how Cam is progressing as a passer, but IMHO both he and the Panthers need to take a step back and not push it as an issue. He is still good with his feet, and it keeps defenses more honest.

TBQH, teams like the Seahawks and the Broncos are going to just keep killing us in the blitz game if we keep this up. They'll adjust to the fact that we're trying to force the pass more and keep an extra blitzer or two in the box, and not just a guy spying.

It is so blatantly obvious, especially when we play blitzing teams like Denver, that we're trying too hard. That's why, especially last year, you see us being able to no-huddle drive the poo out of teams in certain situations, and I really believe it is because Cam is controlling the majority of the calls, and Shula doesn't have a hand in it.

Think about how many times we've had to call timeouts because plays don't get into the huddle in time. That adds stress, and doesn't allow Cam time to survey at the line. In the no-huddle, it keeps defenders on the field, forces the defense to adjust, and gives us more time to survey/audible towards more favorable matchups.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Cam have the option to change the plays when he doesn't like the defense he sees?

Cmon now. If the play works it is because Cam audibles out of a stupid Shula play. If it fails it is because Shula called a stupid play. Stop trying to use logic and consistency here. It is always the same people making these threads and trying to criticize Shula whenever they can. LOL.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
