Gettleman Sorely Needs a Fantastic 2017 Offseason

I believe that Gettleman has to have a great offseason next year or else should be replaced (I say "should" because with our history we like to stick with staff way past their welcome). The honey moon is over. Yes he managed the cap well, but at the expense of fielding a sub-par team. He got too full of himself this year and it has cost the team. He rolled the dice by keeping problem areas the same, hoping they would improve and it's biting him in the ass. You simply can not have a GM in the NFL that barely does anything to help his team. There are many mistakes he made this offseason resulting in an offseason arguably worse than 2010. You can make a good case for it being the worst. Here's what went wrong:

He let go of Norman, which could be argued a bad or good move. However, you cannot deny Gettleman dropped the ball in replacing Norman. There were options in free agency. Amukamara was easily available and only signed a 1 year 5 mill contract. Well within our price range. Cromartie was still available for a while. We kept waiting for Gettleman to pull the trigger on a trade or pick up a significant FA, but it never happened. Instead he chose 3 random CBs in the draft and banked on them to replace an All-Pro CB. A disaster in the making that most of us saw coming.

He also left huge depth issues at several other positions besides Cornerback. Defensive End had a problem with rushing the passer last season, but we do nothing to improve that. Instead we bring back an aging and barely useful Charles Johnson and bank on a wildly inconsistent Kony Ealy. What other options did we bring in to help our woes at DE? No one. We did absolutely nothing, but bring in more sub-par talent.

Safety is another issue where we had depth issues at.  We banked on Dean Marlowe being healthy enough to at least be serviceable and hoped another wildly inconsistent player in Tre Boston would show up to fill in the hole at safety. Neither happened. Colin Jones is also horrible and the only help we brought in behind these guys was cut (Trenton Robinson).

On the offensive side of the ball we left huge holes at both offensive tackle positions. Our tackles were exposed during the SB and it has shown up every week this year. Remmers is a backup at best that we have at starter. Oher is a RT that we have starting at LT. Daryl Williams, for whatever reason, has regressed to the point where he's just a waste of a roster spot. Did we try to bring in significant help through FA behind these guys? Nope. Did we try to draft anyone that could at least help with depth? Nope. Again, we rolled the dice on what we have. Doing nothing but sign a low-end FA in Hawkins. 

Besides tackle, we also left literally no one behind Olsen at the TE position. I see no reason why Dickson is still on the team. He can not block and he can not catch. Why is he here?  None of our other TEs can do either also. Simonson at least had some promise last season, but has showed to be completely horrible in the preseason. Our answer to our tight end woes? Draft a 7th round TE and hope he shows something. Turns out he is terrible and was cut before the season began and the only other TE that at least showed he can catch, Marcus Lucas, was cut as well.

Gettleman also banked on Kelvin Benjamin being enough to help our WR issues. All year long last year we had drop issues and problems with receivers getting open. Turns out that all of that stuff didn't magically disappear this year. They're still inconsistent at getting open. One other note on offense, why in the hell is Tolbert on the team? Can't block, gets stuffed at the line, does nothing basically. Yet Gettleman chooses to stick with him.

Then comes the 2016 draft. Gettleman completely wiffed on this draft. Worst in franchise history. Instead of fixing or helping depth issues that I've mentioned above, he chose to trade away our picks. Resulting in us only carrying 3 picks going into the season.  And of those 3, both Worley and Bradberry have not looked good to me. Worley looks like a complete miss and yet another DG draft pick bust. You just can not throw away picks and go into a season with only 3 and expect your season to go as planned. There is absolutely no excuse for the way Gettleman handled the draft. Yes Norman played a role, but DG chose to put all of his eggs in one basket, while ignoring other issues on the team, and count on any of the 3 CBs to replace Norman. So far DG is the one that looks like he has egg on his face.

I'm not advocating his removal right now. I still have hope he can turn it around. He's had a great run up until this year and has shown he is capable of making the right moves. However, Gettleman got too arrogant and too complacent and thought we'd be OK  filling depth issues with UDFAs and sub-par talent. It is a gigantic red flag when your GM makes hardly any moves to improve your team. In an ever changing league, you have to make moves to improve your team. If you aren't improving, you are regressing. Just simply keeping everything the same is not good enough. This team is not good enough. This coaching staff isn't good enough. Our GM hasn't been good enough this year. All of our problems lay squarely on his shoulders. Whether not helping huge depth issues or keeping a poor coach like Mike Shula on the team, Gettleman has failed us this season. The only salvation he can provide for us is to pull off a couple of trades. However I still feel like he thinks everything is OK in his mind and still believes "The answer is on the roster".

One of his biggest issues is his low volume drafting. It's proven that it's a terrible strategy and he keeps trading up and giving away picks.

Low volume drafting is actually perfect if you're inside of your Super Bowl window, which we're supposed to be. Trade away your nickles for quarters and dollars. The problem is he slammed the window closed before he did it by not supplementing with free agents, and by letting players walk.

It's just very hard for me to get over not going after Prince Amukamara. He was available. He was cheap. We didn't go after him.

Bradberry is going to be a stud just need experience and NFL conditioning but the worst pick was taking Vernon Butler instead of Huntery Henry.

I agree. It's still a horrible draft even if Bradberry pans out. DG was looking too far into the future with the Butler pick. Three draft picks this year. THREE! That's totally inexcusable.

Unpopular opinion we should of never drafted Shaq, Funchess or Butler.

 

Shaq was a project coming out of UW, and really didn't need another LB. it made no sense

Funchess was another project and is basically the same player he was at Michigan, that never developed. We need speed to compliment Kelvin.

Butler was the worst first round pick this past draft. Absolutely terrible decision for a team trying to win the SB

 

Instead of thinking about the present Gettleman is focused on the future, as if we are a rebuilding team.

 

His refusal to help the offense is killing this team

Agree, Should have went  with TE in the 1st round you help the passing game the OTs out

Which he will trade away for players who would fall to us anyways...we are going on 3 years behind @OT,5 @cb and about to be thin at rb and de...it's piling up...we have great depth now time to get some starting talent...
