Many of them within short walking distance.

Some of the reasons I've been wanting to move to Asheville for a while now. Unfortunately I've had a hard time job hunting out that way, partly because I live on the other side of the state.

To each his own. To me its relatively boring. I like some of the things outside of the city, such as the Nantahala outdoor center or the blue ridge parkway, but the city itself is boring.

Washington Post had an article recently calling Sylva the Asheville alternative without the crowds.  Much smaller town but very cool area.  I lived there many years ago and loved it....even though it was not as cool as it is now.

So is the city I live in, Winston Salem.  But I wouldn't recommend it for tourist. Well, except for old Salem perhaps..  I guess its just that I don't drink beer very much, and am not a fan of the arts. Sports, History, and outdoor activities are more my thing.  Although the outdoor stuff has decreased significantly as I have gotten older. 

I  took a trip to Chattanooga a few years ago.  I enjoyed that much more than Asheville.  A little history, some beautiful rivers and mountains, and one or two bars with decent whiskey were more my style.

I prefer cabins in Bryson City with Blue Ridge Parkway view.  Lots of outdoors and very secluded.  I love just to get away for few days.
