Reviewing some of Gettleman's quotes.

We're 1-5 with almost the same roster (minus DBs) as last season.

That 'almost' is what is holding this team back.

Gettleman chose to blow up the secondary. The money combo was the connection/trust Josh Norman had with Kurt Coleman. Tillman starting for 12 games made an impact too. Gone is Norman, and Coleman has been moved to SS. Coleman is weak at SS. The deep coverage and communication now belong to rookies and Boston. This is a severe blow.

Next, you have the loss of Jared Allen. He was disciplined and reliable. He was able to use his experience to free up KK. Now Ealy steps in and he is no hlep to KK as well as an inconsistent and unreliable player at DE.

Then you have the neglected OT position that the Panthers failed to improve and sunk $10m into for 2016.

The biggest hit for the offense is Getleman parting ways with Cotchery and choosing to go without any reliable option for a 3rd down slot receiver.

Those are some serious downgrades over the off season. What makes it worse is Gettleman had the resources to address all of these area and chose to neglect them.

Oh?

Apparently we have different understandings of the word "hopefully".

(I'm not even gonna address "inflected")

"Hopefully" you'll someday be mature enough to be embarrassed by your behavior here.

Hope only works if has those condition which means he can't control his diet. Hopefully you will get of DGs jock.

How about we leave each other alone, no more quoting eaching other.

That's the problem. Its almost the same roster. The same roster that went almost perfect and choked in the SB. Any competent GM would take that game and bring in new players the next season (John Elway). I can go through a list of players who should have been cut and/or not have had so much faith put in them following the SB

To me, that seems like cutting off the nose to spite the face and imo would cause even more of a setback.

Wait a second...you complain about him not fixing the OL and shortly after complain because Michael Oher is one of our best players and is over 30?

Also, you called Tedd Ginn and Charles Johnson a couple of our best players. They are playing decently in their roles but are hardly top players on this team.

I was referring to how he allowed Bell and Nate Chandler to be his bookend tackles in 2014

Another Gettleman quote I didn't add was him bragging about his genius moment of drafting a solution in the event Benjamin went down.

OT, has been a serious need ever since he took over and of his first moves was to restructure gross deal so it ended in 2013. We literally had nothing behind him, which is why Bell was already failing at RT when  he got here.

You may disagree about Oher and Ginm but I said they are both top 12 players on this team.  So if you don't think they belong in that group I'd be interested to hear 12 players on the roster who are playing better.

Id be interested in hearing you're version of our top 12 that does not include them

I'm not sure how you figure that. James Bradberry and Daryl Worley are both long limbed 6'1" 205lbs - 210lbs. Antoine Cason was 6'1" 195lbs. Tre Boston? 6'1". Travell Dixon? 6'1". In fact, the smallest DB on the roster is Robert McClain (5'9") who was signed late last season as a result of Benwikere going down (who was 6'0" 190lbs). If anything, he has shown that he values monstrous bodies in the secondary very much. I think you're taking the word "monstrous" out of context here, as he was talking about needing big bodies to win.

When he said monstrous i thought he meant a combination of size and talent.

You're conveniently ignoring that the 2014 NFL Combine occurred on February 11th, 2014. Jordan Gross announced his retirement on February 25th, 2014. We don't know how much Gross kept Gettleman informed of his decision process, but with what was trotted out is eerily similar to what the Panthers are dealing with this year I think we can assume not much. The retirement forced Carolina to move Byron Bell to LT and for Nate Chandler to kick out from RG to RT (Sound familiar? Hint: A concussed Oher. A Remmers. A Daryl Williams). Trai Turner was drafted and Andrew Norwell was signed as a UDFA. Amini had had a solid rookie year imo with Gross and Kalil on either side, but I think that we can all agree that the drop off from Gross to Bell was astronomical. He also brought in UDFA David Foucault (remember, big bodies is valued as he trusts his coaches to get them prepared). Wharton retired, bringing Amini back to the starting OL (which he'd eventually relinquish that spot to Norwell after injury). Hangartner retired, as did Jeff Byers. That is FOUR offensive linemen retire including a Pro Bowl LT, starting LG, back-up C, and the team's 6th man for the OL that at times started at RG (as well as C and maybe a cpl of times at RT iirc?). This was all AFTER the combine. Kugbila had also been drafted the season before and was still on having back issues which led to the IR for a 2nd straight season for him.

First of all Gettleman knew Gross was retiring after the season. Because Gettleman asked him to restructure and make the final year of his contract an automatically voided year! Sorry not giving credit for replacing talented lineman with Kugbila, and underrated bodies out there. Amini was already on the team. Yes he drafted Turner and we have been fortunate that Norwell has done so well. However I am not comfortable relying on Undrafted players assuming immediate starting roles.

Those were all Hurney contracts that Gettleman was working his way out of. Hardy hadn't re-signed but was too valuable to let go into FA. Hardy hadn't shown just 1 year of outstanding play. He had shown consistent development throughout and then threw together a 15 sack season while also being one of the top run stopping DEs in the game. Are you really going to let that just walk in free agency? No. You tag that big somamabitch. Did anybody here really call Ms. Cleo beforehand and ask if he was going get coked out with his gf and then beat her ass? No, so let's cull that poo real quick pls.

Of course they were Hurney Contracts. And the way you describe Hardy situation then why not leave tag on Norman? The difference in cap space from when we tagged Hardy to what was available with Norman is huge! I never blamed him for the domestic abuse thing and didn't expect him to see it coming. However, Voth reported it was always just a  1 year band aid deal and intent was never there for long term deal.

How did he set himself up in FA? By signing veterans Jericho Cotchery and Jason Avant. That allowed him to take KB in the 1st round and then brought in Philly Brown via UDFA. Taking a look at the players picked between KB and Ealy, I'm very comfortable in saying that he was truly BPA.

Ok so he replaced Steve Smith, Tedd Ginn and Lafell with Cotchery and Avant? LOL come on thats a shitty way to replace them and set yourself up to go BPA. The fact he had to WR in the first was a clear indication he didn't set himself up to go BPA.  As a matter of a fact, that wasn't his biggest blunder in using F.A. to set yourself up to draft BPA.

Byron BELL AND NATE CHANDLER- STARTING TACKLES. - Takes 0 tackles in draft anyway lol.

See our depleted secondary this year. You think he was free to not draft a corner and go BPA at other positions, when he grabbed 3 corners this year?

We knew we weren't getting better in 2014 on offense because we had just lost four offensive linemen to retirement. Know where we did get better? Theoretically before Hardy's charges, our DL (we were returning two great rookie DTs in Star + KK, Hardy and Johnson had each just posted double digit sacks). We definitely improved at WR (went from Smith, LaFell, Ginn, Hixon, King, McNutt, and Pilares <-> Benjamin, Cotchery, Avant, Brown, Bersin (yes, Smitty is amazing, but the rest of the crew was hot garbage)). TE improved by replacing Brockel and Hartsock with Dickson. There's something we're also missing in all of this: this was Gettleman's second season as a GM which he was still hamstrung by bad Hurney contracts... so this asinine view that he should've spent like crazy in FA in order to prepare for BPA is... well... asinine. >.>

You keep name dropping Avant like he was a good move by Gettleman he wasn't lol. Underperformed and possible locker room cancer. Bersin was cut in favor of every player you say he is better than. Benjamin turned out to be a great pick and Brown is coming along nicely for an undrafted player. But so say hey i'm going to replace cam's entire receiving core with 1 draft pick, cotchery, Avant, undrafted player in Brown who makes the team due to lack of talent in front of him and Bersin were better than what we had the previous year is silly.

In his 4th year, David Gettleman has helped assemble rosters that have led to an unprecedented three straight NFC South titles and a team that went 15-1 with a Super Bowl appearance despite losing their #1 WR and cutting the franchise's all time leading rusher before the season began. Has he been perfect? Far from it. He's human and was due some bad bounces.

7-8-1 Season is nothing to brag about, especially when it was a regression from the previous 12-4 season. I never said he had to be perfect, nor have I had thoughts its time to replace him. However he has earned the criticism for these 2 seasons where we regressed immensely from the previous year.

Ready for some of our better players that are 27 and under? Here we go...

27: Cam Newton & Kawann Short
26: Star Lotulelei
25: Kelvin Benjamin, Luke Kuechly,
24: Philly Brown, Andrew Norwell (also: Ealy & Daryl Williams)
23: James Bradberry, Trai Turner (also: Mayo & Cash)
22: Shaq Thompson, Devin Funchess (also: Vernon Butler)

Youngest player on the team? 21yr old Daryl Worley.

I mentioned every player you did aside from these guys: What have you seen from Ealy, Williams, Mayo and Cash that gets you excited?

We have 3 losing seasons with Newton and Kuechly on board. So while they are as good as it gets on either side of the ball, we know we need more talent to succeed!

Injuries have devastated this team in areas they were already thin at (OT, DB). Couple that with losing our #1 RB, 2016 1st rd pick, and even the 2015-2016 NFL MVP for a game and you've got a recipe for disaster. I'm not happy about the reversal of fortune, but the season is far from over and should the team NOT make the postseason, then I believe that the screws need to be tightened on the front office.

Injuries to any position on this team aside from LB, maybe WR, and QB would all be devastating because our team is thin everywhere!

tldr; wall of text crits you for 9999

My answers are in bold, if you care to continue this convo.

    • You didn’t really address the point, just like you ignored the point about the RBs initially, and saying “they are all lotto picks” is just a really silly reduction because you could say that about literally any player rookie or vet every snap, every game, every year. It is well known that different positions have different hit rates, and I would argue different types of prospects within position groups as well, and that hit rates change the further down in the draft you go. Everybody knows QB is different and that, for example, first round OL have a really high success rate. Using your lotto ticket analogy…again…you are saying a lotto ticket with a 1 in 100 chance of hitting is the exact same thing as a lotto ticket with a 1 in 2 chance of hitting (this is an example, don’t take these odds literally). The point was he is no more of a lotto ticket than the 31yr old receiver coming off a major knee injury, and in my opinion he is better odds with a higher potential “jackpot”. Saying one player is an “lotto ticket” while another isn’t is just not sound logic. You have no idea who will break out, regress, get injured, etc. There are safer bets than others, that’s all. I don’t think Diggs is a safe bet and even if he was, weighing him over all of the Panthers WRs plus 2 1k rushers is just dumb. You can disagree if you want. The list is stupid.
    • Yeah, this is all projections of how it will turn out. Inevitability this list will look ridiculous in a full 2025 sesson hindsight, most likely. Still, I am pretty surprised that so many bristled at being thought of as having very, very lowly ranked WR and TE units. We literally have been for years. All you have to do is just have things stay the same and those are immediately bottom 5 units. It is easy to see why one would be reticent to have lofty expectations in the preseason. Gotta show it first when you are a perennial cellar dweller. That's just life at the bottom.
    • That's my biggest concern with making him the 2C.  You split up the Aho Jarvis bromance that accounted for a lot of points.  If Jarvis excels as a C, it could help the team even more though.
