The Browns have also never been 0-16 and no one including your smart ass know it all self knows what inevitable shake ups or change of philosophy is coming to the worst team of all time.  Common sense says that is a long rebuilding project, he is their biggest asset, and he has two years left on his deal and maybe career.

MATHIEU is a unique player in his own right when healthy.  The top of the QB cap also proves there's not only a limit, but it doesn't have to make total sense (Flacco, Romo, and Cousins with a higher cap hit this year than Cam, Brady, Rodgers, Wilson, Luck, Brees, Palmer, etc), son.

what does being 0-16 have to do with it? They've won more than 5 games once since 2008. Is there a level of awfulness you have to reach to trade your best player? Their management philosophy has already shifted when they brought in a bunch of baseball people to run the team. They had a total firesale already (with the bizarre exception of gary Barnidge). They had credible, good offers on the table this year and turned them down. It's pretty clear that Joe Thomas, their best player since coming back into the league and a local hero, is off limits. 

Mathieu is only unique in that he's never healthy. And yes, you are correct in that QBs make more money than safeties. congrats on that monumental observation. If you want a non Mathieu comparison, Harrison Smith just got fifty million, and Berry will certainly want more than that. So if you're okay with paying that, you're basically okay with letting one of Star or Short walk, and maybe holding on to both of the offensive guards. 

Or you know you just find someone serviceable like Harper who isn't Tre Boston, Coleman can do his thing again and voila: you didn't spend over 50 million dollars on a player in fuging remission

Everyone has a price, even the Browns, and even for Thomas.  If it's too much as is quite possible, then move to one of the others mentioned.  

Yes, I would pay just north of Harrison Smith money for Berry and if need be I would let KK go to do it.  Berry's health concerns are not outweighed by KK's disappearing act on the grandest stage of the Super Bowl and for large swaths of this contract year.  Vernon Butler is the parachute here.

You get for what you pay for.  I hate them but the Seahawks have been the best team in the NFC over the last five years by investing heavily in their secondary.  Berry represents a unique opportunity where team need and our resources match the player available.

In the past, I could argue that each of those teams has also had some mighty flops when it came to free agency. In Washington's case, those flops kept them out of any sense of relevancy for almost a decade.

I would look at these three players

1.) CB - Prince Amukamara

Solid CB that shouldn't cost much and gives us 3 solid starters at CB with Worley and Bradberry.

 

2.) WR - Terrance Williams

Has the vertical speed we need at WR and more reliable hands than Ted Ginn.

 

3.) SS - Tony Jefferson

Nice safety that will allow us to put Coleman back at FS.

I sure do not want 7 players like Remmers and Soliai at 4M a pop on this team for the next 3 seasons.

Five of the guys you named were starters on a Superb Owl team. Ours, specifically. I believe that was money well spent, as was the Jared Allen pick up last year. Peanut Tillman anyone?

Dave's ability to pick up quality players for reasonable salaries is pretty well respected around the league. He's one of the best.

And this season, Paul Soliai has been a good choice and Andy Lee sure looked good before he hurt himself.

I think I can rest my case on those. What have you got?
