The 49ers hiring of Kyle Shanahan is now official. Shanahan will be looking to build his coaching staff, and probably wanting to do so quickly.

It had been rumored a few weeks back that Shanahan could be looking to hire Panthers DL Coach Eric Washington as his DC. That's a real possibility, and given his familiarity with the Panthers it's plausible that he might have interest in others as well.

Also, for fans of hiring former players as coaches, Shayne Graham has retired and said he plans to go into coaching.

(no indication the Panthers are looking to change their Special Teams staff at this point)

Actually, the "promotion from within" thing brings up an intriguing possibility as the likely choice would be Sam Mills III.

Is Sam's son ready to take the reins as a full-fledged position coach?

Word now that Shanahan may want two other guys as "co-defensive coordinators".

Not sure how that would work.
