Let's discuss Matt Kalil

With Voth's recent interview on the radio hinting at the possibility of us going after Kalil I figured I'd put my Gamepass to use and watch a little bit of him.

In short, it wasn't pretty.

Kalil is said to be "ready to go" for camp after having hip surgery this past season. Kalil started every game the previous 4 years despite not always being healthy.

Spielman was recently quoted as saying he was seeing progress with Kalil in the limited time he did play this season. However, I watched the first half of the Tennessee game (week 1) and he's terrible in pass protection. I'm looking for any kind of reason to believe that this could be a good move but I don't got much.

Can we blame injuries? Lack of mentoring in Minnesota? Any other kind of theories? To think he's just going to turn it around this season because he's playing with Ryan is a bit of a reach. He had a great rookie season showing he was more than capable of playing the position so what happened?

If for whatever reason the Panthers think he can turn it around he may end up being a great value signing but it's tough to think it'll work out.

For now I'll leave you with these clips I've found on Twitter...

I am trying unsuccessfully to come to grips with it.  For four straight seasons he's either been below average, injured, or outright sucked.

Was a stud at USC. Looked like he was going to be the next best LT in the NFL in his rookie year.

He just decided that Minnesota was a shitty place to play and wants out to come play with his brother.

Yeah I have not understood the pining for this guy at all.  He's in a large pool of below average to average tackles available.  Let's at least go for average.

Search Kalil on the Vikings board and you'll quickly find out these videos aren't some rare sighting.

People see a 6'7, former top 5 pick who made the pro bowl just a few seasons ago and so happens to be the little brother of a fan favorite.

He looks the part and at one point had the potential to be the best LT in the league. Wanting to kick the tires on him is only natural.

Idc Bc he'd be playing RT here in Carolina

If the Panthers sign Kalil, I guarantee you they have every intention of playing and starting him at LT.

At this point it is more likely that Oher has played his final snap and will spend 2017 on IR to collect his check than him coming back

    • While I'd love to add him, it just doesn't make sense for where we are at in our re-build right now. The only teams who should be interested are those who have a very legitimate shot at winning the SB this season, as any team who makes the trade is going to be mortgaging their future to make the move. Teams who make these kinds of trades and then give them the massive contract, in the hopes that it will expedite their path to contention, ALWAYS ends up backfiring because they have to give up the 1st round picks that are then needed to help build out the rest of the roster after eating up such a significant chunk of the cap on the new contract. There is no way the Cowboys trade him for anything less than 2 future 1st rounders (and probably more), plus we'll have to make him the highest paid non QB in league history.  Not to mention that it would then have made the Scourton and/or Princely picks a bit of a waste, as those 2nd and 3rd round picks would have been better off used on a ILB or DB
    • Like his approach to pre season that's ro get them out there and play together for a few plays and right about the night before and morning before.  Maybe we can come out the gate on fire I can smell the smoke from here!!   Go Panthers
    • Only 26 years old, fills the biggest hole on our roster. Top 3 at his respective position, yeah fug it how often does a future HOF player become available in their prime?
