Safety Situation

@L-TownCat sparked a question in my head in another thread, but I was curious for general discussion on the topic. I had suggested that we still need a strong safety this draft, and he responded by pointing out Mike Adams. That's a legit point, and while I still think we need an heir apparent to Adams for when he hangs it up, it got me thinking about our current roster versus the draft.

So here's my question...  does anyone think Tre Boston might be alittle better as a SS? I don't know enough to judge. But perhaps we could switch him to be a strong safety and draft a free safety to back up Coleman and perhaps eventually take over for HIM instead.

what are the Huddle's thoughts?

Boston just isn't a starter. Adams is old but has a 2 year deal. Its a classic short term vet solution for Gettleman. I prefer that route vs sitting on his ass and doing nothing.

In terms of the draft, at this point you truly are looking for BPA, because you just want to find a guy who you'll want back for a 2nd contract if they make it that far. We are picking until 152 and doubtful we are lucky enough to find a starter at any position there. Good selection of number 2 TE's to groom behind Olsen and RB's to pair with McCaffrey after Stewart's deal is up.

Gentleman drafted every position I wanted him to with the first 4 picks (well I could have gone either way on Tackle but if they like him I do too). I'll take whatever TE, WR, RB,DE,SS Gettleman like's most  that is left and even Josh Dobbs in the 7th to groom behind Cam and be the eventual replacement to Derek Anderson.

These are the only players I studied some pre-draft that I like and are still available. The rest would be relative unknowns to me or ones I am not high on.

TE: Jake Butt and George Kittle

RB: Wayne Gallman

WR: Josh Reynolds

I still want a SS. Hoping we can throw our 6th round today for Calvin Pryor. I know he hasn't done much but he was one hell of a Safety coming out. Rivera has shown that he can work with DBs.

I understand your sentiment, but CP just ain't worth the $2.7M cap hit he brings along with him at any cost.

I would be perfectly fine with waiting another year and offering him a reasonable FA contract after the 2017 season (because I highly doubt the Jets pick up his 5th year) and seeing what he could do.

But at the cost of any kind of draft pick and that cap hit?  I don't see it.  And I wouldn't do it.

^this and my response is the same as tiger:

my God i would have to change my shorts if we got him.

I'm going to assume he'll be gone in Round 4 as to not be let down, but fingers still crossed regardless.  Although the best, he's not the only kicking option however and that is comforting.

With what's left on the board, might just wait for teams to cut some guys at safety if we're not comfortable. This late in the draft I think we could see WR (yep), TE, LB or DT (It's DG), CB, or I'm totally on board with the K idea.

Hopefully DG is in on Barnidge...even if we draft a Butt or Kittle.  Olsen, Barnidge, Butt as our 3 TEs? Yes plz.

Not as big on RB today since I think we're set with Stew, CMC, Fozzy.  CAP gets cut, and Samuel is a damn good emergency back option. FB would be nice, but maybe they give Rockhead a chance.

I don't see CAP getting cut.  If (when?) Stew goes down, without CAP there is no back on the roster very much over 200.  I think they'd like to have at least one more guy other than Stew that can push a pile.

    • I don't think anybody with a brain thought or thinks we are a legit super bowl contender this year.  I do LOVE the young core group that is forming. Part of the reason I defend Bryce Young is that if he is not good enough, we're going to waste a lot of this young talent we have anyway.  You don't go from 5-12 to super bowl contender in one offseason unless you get a major injury back or get an insane free agent haul. We currently can't hang with the best teams in the league.  We are also much closer than we were 365 days ago. Progress is good. There's still an outside shot at the playoffs, but I am really excited to see what Dan Morgan does with this offseason. Rico Dowdle a big decision. Jalen Coker, Brycen Tremaine, Cade Mays, Austin Corbett, Brady Christensen, Nick Scott and Christian Rozeboom are the guys we have to make decisions on. But this rebuild should be over next August. Or we have to do it again.  Improvements needed at pass rush and linebacker for sure.  Expecting us to win a super bowl this year is like expecting a kindergartener to do calculus. Is it possible? I guess so. but 99.9% shot it aint happening. We played like doo-doo against the bills, but that was definitely a penciled in loss from the day the schedule came out. Candidly though, if Bryce is ever going to be it, next year is the year we need to start being really good.
    • Yeah he put us in too big of a hole in which we had to pass more.  3rd and long with a slow roll out and he tried to tuck in and run with a fumble in the redzone.  3rd and long with an INT on our side of the field.  Then we get to like the 10ish yard line with less that 30 second and no timeouts (even Greg said we have to try to quick throws here), what does Dalton do?  Take a sack allowing us to barely rush a FG out (which missed due to being rushed).  You absolutely can't take a sack there.  Throw in getting sacked 6 additional times with 2 additional turnovers.  He also missed TMac on a TD where Shaq was trying to cover him and missed an open JHJ on a big gain.  Box Score watching won't tell the story yet people are going to try to do it anyway.   Now it's pretty clear he isn't the upgrade that some were claiming he is, but they can spin it differently I'm sure.
    • The combined record of teams we've beaten: 9-21. Some of y'all get fooled so easily.
