Well, I could argue it's chemistry.

Funchess actually got open last season but Cam never looked his way. Literally, there would be seams, curls, slants, etc where he was wide open but Cam horsefed it to Olsen or Benjamin who were covered instead. Is it trust? Is it that Cam and Funchess don't mesh in the locker room and on the field? I don't know.

Now, that doesn't excuse Funchess' easy drops but he was clutch in certain situations with some crazy acrobatic catches. I don't know. I honestly don't know. Maybe part of the blame also belonged to Proehl. Benjamin is still a poo route runner despite being lazy too.

Hopefully Lance is able to turn this core around because at the moment ALL of our receivers blow.

Funchess was open maybe 20% of the time otherwise he was draped by defender .

That's stupid! I haven't seen not one person over value Funchess. What U have heard people say is that he's young and was even younger coming out of Michigan where his main position was tight end.

You can talk all the poo you want about him not beating out Ginn or Brown, but you know what speaks more volumes? The fact that he is here and they are gone.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with developing a player, particularly a young one, and, even more, one who essentially played another position collegiately. Some things you can't rush! Gettleman, Rivera and most educated fans know that this is the time for Funchess to step up. It wasn't last year with a seasoned Y receiver like Ginn on the squad. It wasn't a rookie year where Funchess was essentially beyond raw. It's this year. He'll get his opportunity to really make the case to start, or he'll become a pick that should never have been made. Even those who don't like Funchess---who want to eject him prematurely---should be able to understand that!

The Carolina Panthers lost a disappointing game against the Minnesota Vikings in which the passing game stalled out and eventually backfired en route to a 22-10 loss. One of the more headscratching issues was the lack of involvement from big wide receivers Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess.

Neither wide receiver caught a pass, with Benjamin only getting his single target late in the game. Funchess would be targeted twice, failing to catch either ball. Former Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn had an answer for that. In the process, he insulted Funchess pretty badly.

“I think we just knew where Benjamin was the whole time. Funchess, we weren’t worried about him. It was Kelvin Benjamin,” Munnerlyn said to reporters after the game. “I’m just going to be honest. Me personally, and I never talk like this, but I don’t think he is that good, No. 17. So, we weren’t really worried about him. We were worried about Benjamin and Ted Ginn Jr. and Corey Brown. We knew they were getting the ball and receiving well. We just tried to communicate and make plays.”

If DF could only work on his route running a bit more. He's faster than KB and has hands, he's just not taking to the WR position like he should by now. Wasn't he a converted TE in Michigan? I don't think he is a starter but he shouldn't be cut either.

Like most college TEs these days, he was basically just an oversized WR. There are very few college TEs these days playing a traditional TE role. They're usually standing up.

From the way people talk, I'd think that Funchess was hated the Huddle over, but looking at the poll results, obviously the restless and impatient fringe are just yapping more than everyone else.

Thank you, Huddle. Some of my faith in this place has been restored.

Cutting him right now is premature.  Most WRs (with some notable exceptions) need a few years to get used to the pro game.  This is his 3rd year, and with the offense being "evolved," he (like the rest of the receivers on this team) needs to get his poo together and proverbially "gid gud or git out."

With the talk about Boston, he had three seasons.  there wasn't enough improvement.  As @LinvilleGorge said on the first page, it's a shot across the bow.  He's a Carolina guy, got to play for the "home" team, yet still did not develop.  Ealy was basically given away because he did not develop.

Message:  Get better or get out.  Devin has to turn that corner (as does KB) as do most of our players going into their 3rd year and beyond.  Or you'll lose your spot.

Stop pretending to know lulz

There were multiple screen shots of Funchess getting open in multiple games. However, let's play your game. Let's say that Funchess was only open 20% of the time. That still doesn't kill his stock. For some of these plays, Funchess was wide open and there was a lot of space in front of him. Those are game changing plays.

2015

Rec: 31   Att: 64  completion percentage : 48%     473yds   5 TD

2016

Rec. 23  Att: 59   completion percentage: 39%    371yds 4 TD

Numbers don't lie

You may be right.  His numbers are comparable to this well-known Panther bust.

Funchess Yr. 1 31-473-5

Funchess Yr. 2 23-371-4

vs.

Bust Yr. 1 25-407-1

Bust Yr. 2 27-317-0

Pie to the first person who names this bust...

Being disappointed in Funchess and wanting him cut right now are two different things. Cutting him right now would be almost as knee jerk and dumb as tanking Norman's franchise tag after every vet who could've helped us was already signed elsewhere. I hope we're done making those types of reactionary moves.
