Go check and see how many Top 10 picks flamed out of the league in their first 5 years.....where you are taken does not guarantee anything.

My point is that most prof athletes (even the elite ones) end up flat broke at a very early age because they go bat poo crazy with crazy spending.

"A new study says that 16 percent of NFL players will go broke within 12 years of retirement. The findings are markedly different from a 2009 study that put the number at 78 percent just two years after retirement. “Players with median-length careers earn about $3.2 million in a few years."

I was broke at an even earlier age, and will probably never have the opportunity to pay cash to buy my  mother a 100k vehicle.

I just see a bunch of dudes with sore pussies because he wasn't drafted here.

If he bought his mother a $100,000 vehicle and were a Carolina Panther, you'd all clawing over top of each other to suck his dick because he's such a high character guy that values family.

Bunch of shitty fuging hypocrites.

You are right of course, but buying an expensive pair of shoes, or his mom an expensive car doesn't necessarily mean he will go thru his money unwisely. If I got that kind of money right now, I would take a trip and buy my mom an expensive car, and probably a few more frivilous expenses.  Then I would invest about 50 percent in some conservative mutual funds.  Now if he starts blowing it in strip clubs, or investing in a friends risky business, then the odds are he will go from rich to broke relatively fast.

Carolina Huddle starting this poo early this year, I see.

Buying his mom some expensive things is fine, every athlete does that. It's when he starts buying expensive thing for his aunts, uncles, cousins, and "friends" that this will become an issue.

A fourth overall pick isn't exactly "the average professional athlete."

Neither was the first overall pick Jamarcus Russell....or the second overall pick Ryan Leaf....or the third overall pick Joey Harrington....or the fourth overall pick Peter Warrick....or the second overall pick Charles Rogers...or the fourth overall pick Aaron Curry....or the sixth overall pick Lawrence Phillips....or the seventh overall pick Andre Ware....or the third overall pick Trent Richardson....or the sixth overall pick Vernon Gholston....or the third overall pick Akili Smith...or the second overall pick Tony Mandarich...shall I go on.

Point is....where you are picked is NO GUARANTEE.

My point was that everyone was flaming the OP for pointing out that the spending was coming early (especially the shoes).....I was just trying to help him out by saying there is a reason that professional athletes usually end up flat broke for a reason.

I know.  Was just pointing out that buying stuff for Mom is not an expense I would use as an example of frivolous spending.  :)

Several years ago, I worked with Chris Paul's mom.  The day after he declared for the NBA draft, she showed up to work to announce her retirement and she was driving a brand new top of the line BMW.  Didn't blame her, or him a bit.

Ah, the old He Could Have Been A Panthers Player But Isn't So Let's Mock Him thread.

Classic.

I wasn't mocking him.  I think he is going to be a beast early on.  I do think he will tail off quicker than many RB's because his style is to try and run through players....that beating takes its toll.

I just was pointing out that many athletes go crazy with the lavish spending and then end up broke.  I hope he gets good advice and makes good decisions....if so, the dude is set up for life.

Well Fournette is actually already GUARANTEED a lot more money than the average athlete. A player can flame out and not end up broke.

The man just became a instant millionaire, if you can't have a little fun with it, and buy dear mom a car, what's the point of having it. It ain't going to the grave with you. For every athlete that's broke, I'm sure there's one who you've never heard of played a few seasons in the league, made some good investments and is set for life.
