Fox used to say that Jake had It. I do not think that Jake has It anymore, and I don't think that Fox ever did.

John Fox has been a good coach at times. He has never looked like a great coach. Even during winning seasons there were a lot of frustrations. He has never been a smart game manager. Since the Del Rio year, the defense has been characterized by looking soft, playing not to lose rather than playing to win. There were moments that looked great but they did not last. They often look flat.

The team, on both sides of the ball is consistently inconsistent.

A coach who has It has team that is always prepared. They come to play. Lose a player...plug in another. Their teams are disciplined, tough, and play to win...for 4 quarters.

A coach who has It never says, "The other team practices too."

Its obvious what she's suggesting.

Its what anyone who has watched the team for years, including the Fox years knows, perhaps do not want to admit. To go the next level, change is needed.

If the goal is to either

a) be a consistent year end, year out winner; or

B) to look like a professional team against the big boys or

c) oh yeah, Safeties and TEs do matter and

d) teams that 'stand pat' in the NFL get passed by and

f) smart teams do not mortgage the entire team for one player and

g) smart teams do not give away #1 draft picks for a player that isn't an every down,

sure start, player and finally,

h) the NFL has become a QB driven League and to have some realistic chance at winning the Superbowl, the Panthers do not have the elite QB or a coach which would know what to do with an elite QB.

...so in short, for this year, nothing can be done, we have what we have, it is what it is, its just one game and the other team practices too.

Not meaning to put words in LP's mouth...

Its sad you know. I remember Fox when he first got here, lean, mean, tough minded, spoke his truth.

Somewhere, along the way, that man is gone, and if not gone, he sure is doing a great job of hiding it.

He will never refresh what he does...its so bad that everyone in the stands, and the other teams know what he is going to call. I still remember the HS coach that called into the talk show with Hurney, and that's a sad comment that he could even spell out the tendencies.

We also have no idea what goes on with the whole dynamics of management.

Fox sure appears to be a good man, as does Jake, but, that's not the measurement on their year to year ratings.

Nothing would make me happier than John/Jake to pull things out; but, at some point, JR has to call a spade a spade and say 'next'.

For whoever the 'next' is, without draft choices next year, its really hard. I kept saying on here that we needed a franchise QB, they don't grow on trees; many said we need this or we need that, but, fact is now, without that strong-armed QB, and they are hard to find, its going to be bleak. Defenses are just to fast for a guy who isn't that mobile, or that quick to do his reads, and who can't throw a dart, but a dying quail that is a jump ball.

Again, Delhomme did good things here; but, I believe, sadly, his shelf-life is done as he requires 'perfect' to make plays and with the speed of the defenses today, 'perfect' just isn't going to exist anymore. He isn't the type of QB, without a running game that can just wing it and win, the defenses don't take him seriously, his tendencies too easy to read.

Well, Fox and Jake are millionaires now...and we keep paying the bills because we love football and hope.

The Panthers should win the next three games against pitiful teams, after that, well, things look pretty rough.

I think everyone hopes for the best with the team and wants Fox and Jake to do well, I don't think that's a question; but, what is the Dr. Phil'ism: 'Cant change what you don't acknowledge'.

These days, more than ever, I understand that "it is what it is." (Or maybe...what it is not).

I continue to support this team. But as it has been said, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Changes were needed long ago. As I think you said in another post, I believe John Fox is a good man, problably is a good friend. But either he coaches with fear, is stubborn, can't make adjustments, or all of the above. I am sure he wants to win....just seems like he is more afraid of losing. I have adjusted...my expectations.

If you look up the definition of insanity, John Fox's picture would be right beside it. Even when his QB sh*ts the bed, he calls him up "You are my guy. Im sticking with you no matter if you stick it up next week, the week after, or the week after that." What is it with Fox's love fest for Jake? What does Jake have to do in order to be benched? I feel like if Jake kicked Fox in the balls, Fox would give him a pass and still say "He's our guy".

Then when asked about the QB situation again "I didn't even think that was a question". Really Fox? You really didn't think there was any question about Jake after he has shown over and over again that he is done? Then says "But if that needs to be clarified, yes, with a capital 'Y.'" Well Fox, keep up with your arrogant head up your ass ways. You're going to end up getting fired, with a capital 'F'.

      It all sounds great. The only unknowns are injuries and how they will need to be addressed. Horn has a history as does the newly added Jaelen Phillips and Cooker has yet to play an entire season as well. And then there are the Ikey's - totally unexpecteded injuries that put a major wrench in your plans. I do think its a great plan though.

      In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
