We've got to get to that super bowl, and we've got to win it! - TD

Team seems determined, and I'm excited. Going to be a long 6 weeks.

They really do. It's amazing the difference a year can make. I just wish they could come out and start  like this every year. Assuming this translates into wins, of course.

This is perhaps my favorite commentary about today, so far.  By Jourdan Rodrique in her latest for the Observer:

Quote

The Panthers threw McCaffrey right into the fire in multiple packages and schemes, and Rivera said he was impressed with how prepared the first-round pick was.

“Today there was a red zone drill, and one thing that happened (was defensive coordinator Steve) Wilks had a blitz on,” said Rivera. “Christian was on, was in there and I looked up and saw the play and it called for Christian to read for protection, which he did very well. I knew it was something that he had to have studied because otherwise he would not have known who to pick up or who to read.”

Ok, wow.  I'm still reading Jourdan Rodrigue's article... She wins for having the most interesting tidbits of the day.  Here's another thing she wrote that I haven't seen reported anywhere else:

Quote

Newton hasn’t just been chattering away to the Panthers’ defense this week.

On Thursday, the quarterback, who is still unable to throw as he progresses on schedule through his post-surgery rehabilitation, was in control of the microphone offensive coordinator Mike Shula usually uses to call the plays.

“We gave him control of the mics and he called plays today,” said Rivera. “He talked with Coach Shula and we were moving the ball and Cam controlled it. He made calls, he communicated with the quarterbacks. He had a big smile on his face. He said ‘I’m not sure if I like doing this. I’d much rather be told what to do.’”

Rivera said the exercise was good for Newton to see what a playcaller goes through and to get a birds-eye view of offensive operations.

“Quite honestly, that’s something that we thought about yesterday that we should have been doing more of, in all honesty,” said Rivera, who added that this might be something the team implements more of in the future with Newton.

She is one of the most interesting reporters. I like reading her stuff. She gets the game. Her podcasts are good too.

Why does it really not encourage me when I read the we probably should have been doing this before from Rivera/Shula?

I appreciate the honesty.  They could Be never had the idea at all.  It's June and they're already making this kind of progress.  This also suggest an open kindness and a willingness to listen and adjust accordingly.   Very strong leadership traits that display their trust and maturation as coaches through the continuity of group and with this team.

I'm really surprised by how good she is.  Bright future for her.

It's not like he hasn't been changing calls at the line for a while now. Hopefully standing in at play caller gives him even more confidence.

It was an indirect swipe to Shula :)

I like Shula but he can be stale on calls.

    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
