Back-up PG

I must admit that the Howard moved combined with getting Monk has made me Hornets crazy. On paper, we are starting to look like an extremely good, deep team. The one position that is lacking is the back up PG position. Also like I said in another thread, Cliff would never have had a rookie PG run the second unit.

My Semi-Realistic PG Wishlist (Not going to say Steph Curry)

1. Shaun Livingston: He would be the perfect leader of the second unit. He is a big PG and could guard PGs or SGs. This would help hide the size of Kemba/Monk. I think he would be my #1 choice.

2. Jeff Teague: Probably not realistic but he struggled with the Pacers and if we could get him for the MLE that would be crazy good.

3. Michael Carter Williams: Only reason I like him is his size. Hate his shooting and probably Cliff would never want him but he still has potential if he could ever put it together. He can drive it but that shooting will drive me crazy.

Not really a fan of MCW. Not even sure if he is better than Sessions tbh. I don't think Teague will want to be a backup much less take the MLE, but who knows- might not be a market for him. Livingston would be incredible but don't think we have the money and why would he leave Golden State unless they don't offer him anything.

Here's someone that's not a free agent, but I would not mind us taking a shot on: Dante Exum. With the Jazz trading up to get Donovan Mitchell Exum looks to be ousted as the PG of the future there. He's had his struggles but he's extremely talented and has never really had a great mentor like Kemba would be.

I'd give them Sessions (lol), Jeremy Lamb plus a couple second rounders. Would not give up any of our core: Batum, MKG, Cody, Kemba, Dwight, etc. Wonder if they would bite on that?

It's crazy that second rounders really do become valuable. If we had an extra second we could have had Mason + Bacon likely.

Part of me wonders whether or not we will try to have Monk run some backup PG. That would be a mistake IMO. He needs to be running off screens all day.

Don't think Teague would come for MLE but my hope is most of the pther teams money is tied up in Chris Paul/Blake Griffin/etc. that the mid level guys have to take less this year especially with the cap going down.

Not a fan of MCW but do like his defens. e.

I love Exums potential but not sure that Cliff wants a young guy.

What about doing something crazy:

- Pick up Sessions option and then trade him and Lamb for Jeremy Lin. Brooklyn goes into full tank mode. We take away cap from them which might interest them

Yeah Boston still has the pick but what the idea is for FA 2018. Brooklyn frees up close to $6m by doing this trade. Throw them a second too, we would just sell it for cash anyways

Dude Exum would be an awesome target.  He still has mad potential and he's been one of the individual players I've been rooting for to do great things.

Unless we pull off a trade, we're looking at an older vet.  You're right that Teague won't come here.

Not much there that's realistic.  Jennings? Ben Udrih?

Seen D Collison name

I just don't know if we want a small PG to pair with a smallish SG in the second unit. Also Cliff mentioned something about a pass first PG. Unfortunately that is slim pickings so we are going to have to acquire one through a trade

Clifford in his post-draft PC mentioned he had talked to Monk about playing some PG. Monk said he was fine with that, as he played a lot of PG in High School, which was only a year ago. Monk also said he'd modeled his game after Kemba Walker's game... Clifford said they would try Monk out at PG and see how comfortable he is at it...

Clifford was referring to trying Monk at PG in Summer League to see how comfortable he was with it at the NBA level...

So as of right now the roster looks like...

PG: Kemb, ???, Weber

SG: Batum, Monk, Graham

SF: MKG, Lamb, Bacon

PF: Marv, Tank, O'Bryant

C: Howard, Zeller, ???

The MLE is projected to be around 8 million and the bi annual exception is projected to be around 3.

The point guard market is pretty horrible but I am a big fan of Patty Mills and as bad as the point guard market is, the center market is much, much worse. I wouldn't be surprised if the Hornets added Mathiang are Karnowski as depth for the center position.

    • I have considered free agency.  LT?  Either not good enough or too expensive.  Besides, this is a good OT draft.  (I would rather have a free agent, mind you, but the Panthers' reality suggests we can't do it without neglecting other positions).  What LTs are available in free agency, and what do you expect to pay?  Any Ickey-level OT is going to cost over $20m.   How much do we already have invested in our OL?  I get your point, but I do not think you can spend over $100m per on your OL. We have 2 guards and a center who pull in about $75m per season.  We don't have a center yet.  Teams just don't let good LTs hit free agency, and when one does on rare occasion, he is expensive.  If you want a third of the Panther cap going to 5 Offensive Linemen, free agency is the way to go.  We still need S, ILB, Edge, WR, etc. I think we'd need more than Nijman--and I would understand if we went free agent for a T--but that is putting a TON of your cap at OL--so considering our situation, I do not see that option as preferable.  You may disagree. If I was not talking LT on our line and thinking about the cap, I would agree 100%.
    • Will be interesting to see how they come out tonight. The Boston game seemed to open the flood gates of media attention. And it’s not just that they’re playing well, in some instances they are getting compared with all time greats. This is still a young team, and it would be easy for an immature team to lose some focus, buy into their own hype, and think they can coast bit. The Heat are a middle of the road team without their leading scorer. There is no big dragon to slay, no big statement to make. I think we’ll learn a lot tonight: are they young but mature, or do they still have a ways to go mentally?
    • Panthers North for the win. Good luck to him. Great guy, hated to see him leave here, but he's about to work with the best QB he's ever worked with (at least on a regular basis).
