Where there's smoke there's fire, and there's a ton of smoke. I've never seen anything like this. It was probably the right move to get rid of Dave..

i will give you that, he does seem to have been hated a lot more than your average NFL exec, even considering a high sample of salty mofos getting spoiled by hurney contracts.

i still disagree with the decision to fire him based solely on that though.

Gettleman did more for this franchise in 5 seasons than any coach or personnel guy ever has. There is reason for the defense. The players were bitter that Marty "Pay Everyone" Hurney wasn't still the guy in charge.

Ever heard of John Fox? He did a pretty decent job of taking a team from 1-15 to the Super Bowl in 2 years.

Did he win the NFC South 3 years in a row? Did he ever go 15-1? No. He didn't. Gettleman accomplished more, and quite frankly, with less.

Fox had a decent 4 years. Then he tanked into mediocrity to stay.

Eh, I think this mindset is getting out of hand. Not every player is a lazy ass just looking to cash a check.

For the record, I think this was a short sighted move overall to say the least. But the hate towards players by some fans as a means of making themselves feel better makes them look that much more unhinged.

You said nobody did as much in five seasons as Gettleman.

2002 - 7-9
2003 - 11-5, NFCS, Super Bowl
2004 - 7-9
2005 - 11-5, Wild card, NFC Championship

Gettleman
2013 - 12-4, NFCS, Divisional round
2014 - 7-8-1, NFCS, Divisional round
2015 - 15-1, Super Bowl
2016 - 6-10

Seems fairly even to me.

No one said that the player's were lazy asses looking to cash a check. But the fact remains, you can't pay everyone. Every good team lets players go and fills their void with cheaper and younger alternatives. Granted, loyalty is a part of growing a franchise, but Gettleman was brought here to make the tough decisions.

Anyone else think JR has lost it? Let's face it, he is 80 something and had a heart transplant. Not that he was ever really good at this GM, coach thing anyway, but age hastaken its toll on him and he's only a shell of his former self.

I think he just loves his players like sons.

Short term, this season maybe that mindset will help to propel us to sucsess.  Does that mentally sustain success?  Idk, history with this team says no.

Lol, seeing the emo-like outrage over his firing is hilarious.  Shoe's on the other foot and seeing people lose their poo bc "their guy" got canned is truly poetic.  I said time and time again, if it was just about production, so be it.  But, he went out of his way to make it personal.  You release your franchise's best player that gave his blood, sweat, and tears for you through thick and thin...  when you gave him no help, when he had little to no surrounding talent...  you come in as a new GM and unceremonioisly release him, without honoring him or acknowledging his greatness or contributions to the franchise and then belittle him on the way out with absolutely no heads up or professional courtesy.  In another unprecedented move, you rescind the tag for no fuging reason and release the top player at his postion to free agency and then sit on 20M the entire season while his unit gets torched through a learning curve.  I said time and time again, he was overly stubborn, arrogant, and unprofessional in his dealings with players and it would eventually come back to bite us...  Thank God JR made this move, as I have a feeling the recent bad press from DeAngelo, Smitty, TD, and Olsen directed towards Gettleman was just the tip of the iceberg and agents were going to eventually stone wall him altogether.  And again, there was a reason he didn't become a GM until his 60s...  and there is a reason a poo ton of former players and franchise icons are coming out and speaking on his dismissal.  It's not coincidental, he rubbed people the wrong way and made things personal.

And for those losing their poo about the direction of the franchise...  don't.  He wasn't some savant.  He was a great scout that lacked the people skills and business-first mentality to be a competent GM.  He also wasn't a cap guy.  Brandon Beane was...  so if there's anything you should be mad or disappointed about, it's that we let Beane walk after grooming him for years, all while knowing Gettleman was likely on the hot seat at the time.

(Sn: to his credit, I do think this was his best off-season, both in FA and the draft, but we still have our scouting dept., so I'm not sweating that either.  We just need to bring in a guy with knowledge of the cap and a balanced, reasoned respect for players current value judged against contributions made.  It won't be hard to replace.)

And I'm seeing a lot of eeyore-like posts about losing faith in the front office, namely JR over this move.  Smh...  honestly, with the current turnover rate in the NFL, if other GMs had done half of the highly-publicized, unusual stunts Gettleman had, they would've been canned two years in.  I was surprised JR didn't fire him after what happened in Atlanta and subsequently after that first game against them last season.

The timing is weird to day the least, but he hasn't lost it at all, imo.  I think it was an accumulation of frustration with things he had done, especially with guys JR cared about personally.  As long as the results were there, JR left him the reins...  but last year, combined with the oversaturation of bad press from several respected vets and impending issues with two of his favorite guys in TD and Olsen, he probably caught wind of things in the negotiation process and had enough.
