Pros and Cons of Hurney

I love how people give hurney credit for Cam. You guys do realize that if hurney had his way we would have traded the Number one pick in the draft we used to get Cam to move up to draft jimmy Clausen, right?

Nah

Hurney learns from past mistakes. Extends TD and Olsen to modest deals. 

Resigns Steve Smith when he decided to return midseason. Comes up with key grabs in playoffs.

Panthers run the table and win the Superbowl.

Cons: Doomed this franchise to years of moody seesaw irrelevance in 2011. Cap ignoramus.

Pros: Leadership, decisionmaking (otherwise), character, team-building, FO personnel selection.

Personally, I'm with the Hurninator. I think he's learned from his mistakes and is gearing up to build a culture of excellence.

Gettleman is by far the better evaluator and would be an ideal re-hire in a scouting role - except his pride wouldn't allow it. Peter principle, NFL-style.

Hurney didn't adapt or hone his craft over his 12 years he already spent with the Panthers.  His one quality he was said to have was being a cap guru, but then he destroyed our cap.  He had plenty of chances and he set this franchise back dramatically, what has he done to show that he's all of a sudden a completely different GM that got better at scouting and negotiating?

That's right. I laugh every time I hear someone give credit to Hurney for drafting Cam. The only credit he deserves for Cam Newton being a Panther is for constructing a roster that sucked so bad we got the #1 pick.

I think you must be pretty young, or not a fan of the team for too long, to not understand the contrast between what Hurney did and what Seifert/Capers did before him.

I don't know of anyone that's happy Hurney's back, but it's probably not the disaster people are predicting.

He gets more than no credit for drafting Cam. It was the obvious choice, but people overthink things in the draft all the time. 

That's about all the positive spin I got.....

According to J Person - all 6 team captains were acquired by Hurney.

Pros: our owner loves him as a puppet
He didn't screw up a #1 pick where 80% of the guys who went in the top 11 are going to be in the hall.

Cons: sucks at drafting outside of the first round
He sucks at managing the cap.
He sucks at handling contracts
He's a yes man
